Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Whampoa Military Academy was pivotal to the development of modern Chinese army and navy. The restored former site, although quite distant from downtown Guangzhou, offers a glimpse of the life of the military cadre. The narrative, largely in Chinese only, heavily favors the communists though. It is a popular local attraction with quite a lot of tour groups.

We learned of the history of the Military Academy. It was a training academy for Sun Yat-Sen’s military leaders. Dr. Sun-Yat-sen, is Guangzhou’s most famous historical figure and was a leader of the revolutionary army. The rooms are much like they were in the 1920s.

I wasn't expecting much before getting there since we were simply finding a place to visit on a Sunday to pass time. The drive from city center to Huangpu took a while as our guide was not familiar with the route. Once we got there, we decided to pay for a guided tour of the museum and it was worth the investment. Very informative and this place does tell you a lot about the history of modern China.

Visit to the Former Site of Whampoa Military Academy is worth a visit if you are a historian / history buff. Although the info is pretty much in Mandarin, so you may not understand a lot of things, but it sure offers a good insight into the past.

The academy site is being renovated, so there are changes happening. I live nearby and have bee twice, the first time many parts were closed off, but six months later it has improved a lot. Areas are being reopened to the public that had been closed off and though it is not extensive it does give a sense of what it was like at an important time in China immediately after the fall of the emperor. I have also been to the Sun Yet Sen Memorial Hall and there they tell a more complete story of his historical role, but here you can see where things actually happened.

It is a beautiful location on the Pearl River and just a nice place to walk, including the surrounding village with a convenient ferry location across the river.

Whampoa [Huangpu] Military Academy was founded in 1924 by the Kuomintang, under Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the father of modern-day China. Sun Yat-sen was one of the two co-founders of the Kuomintang, known as the Nationalist Party [of China]. It was used as an academy to train military leaders, and in the light of the accomplishments of Sun Yat-sen and his trained elite, it likely achieved its goals with flying colours.

When I previously went through Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Guangzhou, I read a lot on the military achievements of Sun Yat-sen, and thus was interested to learn more by visiting his former military academy.

To enter the old academy, I showed my passport as my ID document. That gave me a free entry. It is closed on Mondays; on the other days of the week, it is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the last admission at 4:30 pm.

Most of the displayed information was in both Chinese and English.

It was exciting to take a water taxi to an island(never knew GZ had water taxis till that trip!)but there isn't much to see there, especially for a foreigner unfamiliar with the history of the place and the importance it once had. If you've got nothing better to do then by all means, go take a stroll, it's fairly quiet and not crowded, even on a weekend.

The sampling of modern history and peek into culture. The cooperation between left and right wing to setup this military academy is revealed. The first few batches of graduates were The Who is who in china. Those who persevere and survived enjoy the fame, power and the abundance. Others are idealists who struggled in the internal fight. Life was tough. Work and studying was hard. The layout of the principal office and the organization structure are telling of the Chinese governance philosophy. E.g. tri party leadership of government, party and management is obviously prevalent. Ideology and political correctness supersede civil service and technical education. From the layout of the boardroom, it’s also telling of the Chinese operation mode. Principal office is connected to secretary room with 2 officers, one handling instructions from the boss and the other disseminating further. In the boardroom the back bench are interesting for assistants to record and implement. The premier office is for layback chat with stakeholders. Students sleep together in 4 beds connected.

If you're the one who love chinese history I'd like to recommend this place for you. From Yuzhu station take motorcycle for 5 minute or walk 15 minute to pier.

Wait ferry boat to whampoa every 30 minutes you'll find the historic place of modern china history. Sun Yat Sen, Chiang Kai Check, Zhou Enlai use to be here. There still be classroom, residence and museum of them to show how they live and work at the past.

Foriegner visitor can show passport to get free ticket.
