In early May, the garden was mostly dark, lush green. Less than 5% of the trees and plants were in bloom. Of the various sections of the garden, I most enjoyed the Tropical rainforest Conservatory, the Desert Plant Conservatory, and watching the Koi fish scramble for food as they were being fed by sightseers and their children. Also nice was the relaxing walk through the gardens.

Mostly local families were in the park/garden during our walk through. There is a play area, where many families had gathered. From a botanical gardens standpoint, it might be a little better than average, but not outstanding.

Well if you like to be outdoors then this is another nice place to venture out for a walk, like I did. The weather had sobered down and with the sun shining it offers a perfect getaway to be in nature. Lots of nice flowers and tall trees lined up. Avoid using your phone and enjoy the outdoor.

The Southern China Botanical Garden is really nice and pristine. We had a really nice walk in the nature on a rather cool day in Guangzhou.

The botanical garden is very nice to spend a « quite » moment. The park is huge so I advice to take at least 3-4 hours to visit it.
We took the full package with the conservatory for 50 yuan which is good value.
BE CAREFULL : the metro station is Botanical garden as not Changban

We went on a very humid near-rainy day. It was hot and very wet but we rented a pedal-cart thing, rode around the entire park, sweated our butts off and enjoyed ourselves. Lots of lovely greenery and riding around was a lovely way to experience it, breezy and speedy, however we were still soaked when we returned the cart. I definitely recommend renting that again. Wear minimal clothing if you go during the warmer months, bring energy snacks and water and comfy shoes.

Butterflies - I visited here in the autumn and saw more butterflies here in their natural surroundings than I saw on BaiYun mountain.
It is a little out of the way to get to. You can ride the metro as far as you can on line 6 and then walk the last 15 minutes (it is on the same street North as the metro station - walk towards the green hills). Park entrance is 50 Yuan. The park is simply beautiful and well established (over 80 years in operation) and one of the widest selections of sub tropical flora I have seen in an outdoor setting. The pathways are interesting and weave in and out of different genera of plants, and there are tonnes of beautiful places to take pictures, see butterflies and smell nature. It is not that busy. There is some construction going on so that adds a little to the background noise, but doesn't take away from the rustic beauty. There is an electric bus service for those who are unable to walk the massive park for a nominal charge).

We paid 50 yuan entrance fee each to see the greenhouse plants. If you do not want to take any photos of huge cactuses or a waterfall, then miss it and pay only 20 yuan.
The air is so clean there. You feel like you are in a tropical rainforest. The park is very beautiful. If you are tired of visiting concrete jungle, go to this park. It's amazing.
If you are on budget, you can take a metro, orange line 3 to Guangzhou couch terminal. If you take the exit where the coach terminal itself is, then go across the road and take bus 28 to 广州植物园南站(guangzhou zhiwu yuan nan zhan)
You can rent a 4-wheel cab to ride it with your friends or family.
The place has 3 greenhouses, lakes with golden fish, an attraction area with rides for children, a bbq place, palm trees area, medical plants area as well. There were lots of just married couples having wedding photo sessions. I felt tired but happy after visiting. Next time I am gonna take meat to have bbq there for sure!

When I mentioned to SWMBO that we’d never visited this attraction and that it wasn’t too far away she told me emphatically that we had been there before, and she didn’t want to go there again. I was perplexed and told her I couldn’t remember going there. SWMBO was equally perplexed that I couldn’t remember going there 15 years ago for a couple of hours. She’s now sure this is an early sign of dementia!
She even remembered she wore a red jacket. Amazingly I’ve got a few photographs from 2005 and sure enough there she is sitting on a stone in the park wearing a red jacket.
Anyway, back to the present. At lunchtime we took No 46 bus from a local bus stop for an hour all the way to its terminus, then it was a fifteen-minute walk to the West Gate of the garden. As we walked the sky darkened and the wind increased, as we got to small ticket office heavy drops of tropical rain were coming down. SWMBO purchased a ¥20 ticket which was just for the garden, a ¥50 ticked gave access to the large greenhouse. Me being suitably ancient was admitted for free. A nice map comes with the ticket.
Just as we finished getting the tickets the heavens opened. Luckily, there’s a small shelter at the back of the ticket office where we sheltered for 15 minutes while the storm blew over.
Note: There’s the Botanical Garden metro station on Line 6 which is a couple of hundred metres from the garden’s main entrance. We used the metro on the return journey. As ever, get a travel card and use this rather than mess around attempting to buy tickets for every journey on bus, metro and tram withing the city. If used often enough, you’ll get a 20% discount for the rest of the month.
When the rain had stopped, we ventured into the park. The park is as flat as a pancake so no steps. There are wide tarmac paths with plenty of signposts to prevent you getting lost, and many of the ‘gardens’ have English information notices about the plants and shrubs. Off the paths it was a bit soft as there’s been a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks.
There’s plenty of large grass areas for kids to run around, and a few snack stalls for ice cream and cold drinks. I’m sure one stall was hiring kites. There are also family four-wheel bicycles for hire, I couldn’t see where from but I’m sure the main gate office will know.
There are plenty of secluded places to sit and rest weary legs while enjoying a view across a lake. There are clean toilets dotted throughout the garden.
We only had three hours to explore that park and that’s why we didn’t opt for a greenhouse ticket. I’m sure we’ll be back to explore this as it looked rather nice. SWMBO moaned about being charged extra if we wanted to visit it as she reckoned it was free 15 years ago. I’ve got a feeling it wasn’t there 15 years ago!
Anyway, we strolled along the paths around the lakes and eventually ended up by the main gate. After nearly three hours we had probably seen much less than half the park and not any of the specialist gardens. Not too many flowers in bloom but the recent nearly daily tropical storms must have played havoc with them.
I’m sure we’ll return and explore more and have lunch in the vegetarian restaurant, but we’ll wait until the weather’s a little more settled but not 15 years.

Is this place wheelchair friendly?
Written 24 August 2018
Yes, you could get around a lot of the garden in a wheelchair. The pathways are mostly paved and without steps. The greenhouses would be more difficult - some had rocky paths and steps. If I remember correctly, you'd be able to get into all of them, but not get everywhere within them. There is also a ride system - you can get on this, and it will take you around the garden. However, it is not wheelchair accessible. Its cost is included in the price of the entrance ticket.

what metro stop brings us the closest to the garden?
Written 20 September 2015
A taxi would be an easy alternative. When we visited the botanical garden, our cousin who is a local in Guangzhou drove us there and back by his car, unfortunately for the reader
