Saudi tourism authorities have done a good job of renovating and cleaning up sites of historical importance to Muslims. I visited this site nearly 12 years ago. Today this masjid and the area around Uhud has been cleaned up with requisite facilities for religious tourists. Perhaps a brief narrative in various languages of what transpired here should be posted here so tourists can refresh their memory and the young pilgrims can read and learn.

The cemetery of the 70 martyrs including of Saidina Hamzah is located next to the big mosque. No marker or tombstones available now to make out where exactly the Prophet's uncle lie. I came again after a hiatus of 10 years and few things have changed including a big mosque was built next to the cemetery.
In my last visit to the cemetery about 10 years ago, I smelled a beautiful scent and my mutawwif said that is the scent of jannah that emanates from the tomb of Saidina Hamzah. I couldn't detect the smell again this time around. Sad..

Follow Sunnah while visiting any Muslims' grave & don't go over the line to be amongst the disobedients.
Hazrat Hamza fought with great fearlessness in the battle of Uhud and his heroic feats on the battlefield become legendary in Muslim military history. But, tragically, he was martyred in the same battle he had dominated. He was killed by the javelin of Wahshi bin Harb, an Abyssinian slave, who with that successful throw earned his freedom from his master, Jubayr bin Mutim.
For the Muslims, the battle held a religious dimension as well as a military one. They had expected another victory like at Badr, which was considered a sign of God's favor upon them. At Uhud, however, they had barely held off the invaders and had lost a great many men. A verse of the Qur'an revealed soon after the battle cited the Muslims' disobedience and desire for loot as the cause for this setback:
Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission Were about to annihilate your enemy,-until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you but He forgave you: For Allah is full of grace to those who believe. — Qur'an, sura 3 (Al Imran), ayah 152
According to the Qur'an, then, the misfortunes at Uhud — largely the result of the rear guard abandoning their position in order to seek booty — were partly a punishment and partly a test for steadfastness. Firestone observes that such verses provided inspiration and hope to the Muslims, sacralizing future battles that they would experience. He adds that rather than demoralizing the Muslims, the battle seemed to reinforce the solidarity between them.

This is the grave of the Uhud martyrs and that of Prophet Muhammad’s uncle, Saidina Hamzah. The grave was huge and the area was gated. It is within the Mount Uhud area.
While you’re there, please take a moment to say a few prayers for the martyrs and reflect on the sacrifices that they have made for Islam.

During Umra visit to the Holy places of Makkah and Madina, every pilgrim visits historical places relative to the Islamic period of our last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW- The love for the Messenger of Allah (SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) requires that one never tires, both verbally or in writing, from sending blessings and salutations upon him (SallAllaho Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam). One would never miss the place like the Uhad. It is a place where there is the largest mountain in Medina and a major pilgrimage site, Mount Uhud commemorates the famous battle between Muslim and Meccan forces in 625 CE. Climb a small hill to observe the site of the battlefield, and see the burial places of the Prophet Muhammad's 50 companions who perished, most notably his uncle Hamza. A mosque also stands on site. The mount rises 1,077 m (3,533 ft) and bears a large painted inscription of the word "Allah" in Arabic on its slope.
