This monument is not paid by the government but by the mothers who lost there sons during the war in Afghanistan. It makes a deep impression and reminds us of the horrors of war.

This is monument to the sons, fathers, husbands that died in a pointless war. It is a monumental memorial, but not overwhelming and definitely worth a visit, and the respect that the site deserves. It is listed on the free city map we found in the hotel as the Monument to The Black Tulip. The name Black Tulip comes from the nickname of An-12, the Soviet Transport Aircraft that carried dead bodies back from Afghanistan. The black tulip monument is located in Soviet Army square, at the intersection of Pervomayskaya and Mamina-Sibiryaka Streets.The monument was installed in 1996. This is a great memorial, and probably the best monument in Yekaterinburg. It is comprised of two sections. The first section, is a sculpture of a soldier, sitting and bent over in a dejected pose with AK rifle in his right hand.On either side of the soldier are five grey columns with the years of the Afghan war and names of fallen soldiers on them i.e. 1979-1989. At the base of the columns are a black tulip relief, and flower beds with red flowers. In front of the soldier is a relief of guns with the words "Afghan" in Russian script.To the rear of the monument is a relief of drooping black tulips. Behind the soldier sculpture, is a monument to the fallen in the Chechen wars.The centerpiece of the monument is a bell tower, with a silver bell. At the base of the bell tower, is the name Chechnya in Russian script. On either side of the bell tower are six grey columns with the years of the war and names of the fallen. The six columns to the left, relate to the period of the first Chechen war i.e. 1994-1996, and the columns to the right, relate to the second Chechen war i.e. 1999-2009. On the sides of the monument are war reliefs. The Afghanistan war was a disaster for the Russian Army, with over 600,000 troops serving, and over 13,000 dead. The statistics on the Chechen wars are not very accurate, with estimates of between 5,000-8,000 deaths.We had visited a similar monument in Pervouralsk on the previous day, which was a BMP unit.These monuments are sometimes called monuments to International conflicts, and we had seen quite a few whilst travelling through Russia and former Soviet states. The Afghan monuments usually show the soldier in a defeated or dejected pose. The black tulip, is the name in the army given to the Antonov An-12 planes, which used to transport the bodies of fallen Russians back home. This area is easily reached by tram # 2,3,8,14,20,23,25,26,32. You can also take a bus or trolleybus to Karla Libknekhta Street, and the Square is a short stroll in an easterly direction. Other nearby attractions include; the Military museum, Ascension church, Komsomol statue and Kharitonov Palace.…

The memorial does depict horror and grief of the aftermath of a war. The soldier sitting in the middle is contemplating what did he gain out of killing the other soldiers whom he did not even know, than how come he became his enemy. A master piece of Art. Hope this art atleast brings an awareness among people to not go to war ever.…
