The weir on the Iset river was the beginning of Yekaterinburg. It was built in 1723 by the orders of Vasily Tatishchev (see the nearby monument to him and his successor Georg de Gennin) to provide power to the iron works established here. Today the low dam, which separates the city pond from the historical square, is a favourite meeting place for locals, but also beloved by individuals, who just want some quiet, seated on one of the benches or steps here and meditating by looking over the water. The weir here is called 'Plotinka' and the busy Lenin Avenue goes over it. It’s a nice place to wander. When I went there were people feeding the ducks. There are love locket bridges as well. A haven in the middle of the city.

Lots of activity taking place and this social gathering place. Many couples out for a romantic evening walk by the River Iset, street performers, teenagers hanging out, families on an outing, food and souvenir vendors, etc.
