If you love ballet and Russian history.....you will want to visit this theatre, where Pavlova, Fokine, Karsavina, Nijinsky, Balanchine, Ulanova, Assylmuratova and so many other great dancers first danced after graduating. The theatre where the future Tsar Nicholas II, as a young man, met and had an affair with the young ballerina, Mathilde Kschessinskaya (can never remember how to spell... More

Went to St Petersburg for business. Was invited to an opera, wasn't really interested in the opera but decided to go. Glad I did. Each play is a unique act performed by many talented humans

The evening in the Mariinsky theatre is always delightful. This time together with my friend we were watching the evening if the short ballets. Breath-taking and definitely worth seeing!

We were passengers on the Noordam and paid a huge amount to attend the Russian ballet at this theatre. The pictures in the brochure etc showed girls in classical white ballet dresses, but we got a stark black and red production of a version of Carmen, with dancing and cheap sets which looked like a production from an old movie,... Rated worlds best ballet ensemble. You don't have to know ballet to be intrigued by these highly professional ballet dancers. Lovingly restored house for ballet and opera. Can easily be reached by a nice stroll along Griboyedov canal from Nevsky Prospekt. Be aware the ensemble has holiday in July and August. During summer visiting ballet and opera groups from other... The Mariinsky Theatre is a historic theatre of opera and ballet (called the Mariinsky Ballet and Mariinsky Opera) and home to Mariinsky Orchestra in Saint Petersburg. It became the preeminent music theatre of late 19th century in Russia. Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov premiered their stage masterpieces here. The Mariinsky Ballet is the resident classical ballet company of the Mariinsky Theatre.... More

It’s as posh and Imperial as it gets. Built in neoclassical style, the theatre’s facades are monumental, sharp and aristocratically chilled. This impression changes as its interior decor turns into a sheer delight. Once in, you’ll notice yourself a part of a multicultural beau monde eager to be amazed. Just a few minutes into a performance you’ll see a change... More

If you like ballet you will probably come to Pieter just to come here, as this is the temple of classical ballet. Tickets are quite expensive, but it's worth the cost to come over, the theatre itself is a museum and it's one of those "once in a lifetime experiences" that given the chance is good to have.

Just saw Evgeni Onegin. The singers and the decorations are incredible. There is a screen above the stage with English subs so you can actually know what are they singing about. The theatre itself is breathtaking.
