There was a group about to do some photography, people in costumes trying to get into photos for a fee and lots of traffic buzzing around this square. There were three police cars but no sign of officers. Lots of memorial to Peter the Great...More

The most remarkable thing about this statue is how the horse supports all that incredible weight on 2 skinny little back feet. The rest is ho-hum. Alex II ordered the statue so as to honor his predecessor Nick I (father of the Romanov last-of-his-line Nicholas...More

Erected in the 1850s close to the spot from which the Decembrist Revolt of 1825 was crushed this is an impressive monument to the "reluctant" Czar Nicholas I. He is show on a rearing charger in full military uniform. As another reviewer says, the plinth...More

A monument to “pay respect and homage”’ to the despotic and absolutist Nicholas I. Close to neighbouring St. Isaac's Cathedral. On one of the Saint Petersburg’s most beautiful and historic squares. An impressive monument!

This statue of Russian famous ruler Nicholas I, is located on St. Isaac square in front of the Cathedral. It is a wonderful piece of art, and maybe the pedestal is even more impressive than the statue itself.

Best viewed during the soft light of sunrise or sunset, the equestrian monument to Nicholas I is in Isaakiyevskaya Square within sight of St. Isaac's Cathedral. Designed by Auguste de Montferrand in 1856 the monument was completed in 1859.

This statue, facing St. Isaac's square, was erected as a memorial to Tsar Nicholas 1 and resembles the statue of Andrew Jackson in Washington D.C. that predated it. The pedestal and base of the statue are very intricate, depicting events during Nicholas' life. The lamp...More
