About
Built to memorialize Alexander II following his assassination in 1881, this magnificent church with Italian pink marble floors and numerous mosaics was modeled after 16th and 17th century churches, contrasting sharply with the prevailing architectural styles.

One of the most beautiful churches in the world. Audioguide is available for a small extra charge (2.5 EUR), however fully worth it to get to know the story why this church was build and what the purpose is of the interior

Beautiful

Very beautiful, both outside as well as inside. The inside is very rich, there are many beautiful details. It is very touristy and gets crowded but still worth a visit.

Amazing and Colorful Architecture
Oct. 2020 • Friends
As beautiful on the outside as the photographs portray, the tour inside was reminiscent-of most church tours in Europe. Lots of outside restoration being done makes photography difficult as the scaffolding is evident all around the church. But still magnificent to see the unique architecture!

Heart of the Saint Petersburg

A must see place in Saint Pet is Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. It is included in my top-3 of cathedrals in the city, however the loveliest is Saint Isaac`s cathedral.
It has a breathtaking long history since it was founded in 1883 on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated – therefore «spilled blood». The inner decoration looks majestically due to numerous of mosaics. The fact is this church has the greatest square of mosaics in the world with over 7.500 sqm of amazing artwork. Entry fee is 350 rubles and it was a bit surprising for us that excursion is included for free. Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood leaved me overwhelmed and awe, I would recommend it to visit.

A favourite in St P.

A must when in town. This place is really beautiful and full of majesty. The colors have altered. The interior of the church is a bit surprising and rather kitsch, but it is a must see.Avoid the crowds by going early in the morning otherwise it is just packed with tourists who do not respect the place.

Amazing history and interiors of St. Pet landmark
Apr. 2021
As this Church much reminds on St. Basil's in Moscow it's not that old (neither is St. Pet as a city), but it has a very interesting history and breathtaking interiors which make it a must visit site. History facts:
- it was built in 1883 to commemorate the place of Tsar Alexander II assassination in 1881 - therefore "spilled blood",
- the Romanov imperial family funded the project,
- in order to house the exact place of assassination inside the Church, they narrowed the canal,
- after the 1917 Revolution overthrowing the Imperial regime, it was looted and semi-destroyed,
- WWII and Leningrad siege brought further destroy and it was turned into a morgue,
- after WWII Communist regime banned Church services likewise in all Russia, making it a warehouse,
- it was rebuilt during the 90's and reopened in 1997
- toady it's not a working Church, but the world's biggest mosaic museum with over 7.500 sqm of amazing artwork.
- photography is allowed, entry fee around 8$.

Too recent
Feb. 2021
The artefacts and mosaics in this church are too recent. No artistry seen in them and looked like they are machine made than hand made ones you find in many other opulent churches.
