Built to memorialize Alexander II following his assassination in 1881, this magnificent church with Italian pink marble floors and numerous mosaics was modeled after 16th and 17th century churches, contrasting sharply with the prevailing architectural styles.

Inside and out this is an extraordinary building. We were greatly helped by a guide who explained the story.

Great experience, go in the day to see the inside but make sure you walk by at night to see it all lit up and beautiful and serene.

This church is beautiful from outside and also the interior. The mosaics and colors combined with gold are just incredible. After we visited this church, we walked by this church a few times. I thought I would never get tired of seeing this beautiful church....More

Spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded....., pictures can be taken. Note: tour groups seem to get preferential treatment, but frankly, Americans and other non-Russians likely would only view/tour the major St Petersburg sites with a tour guide. Our TJ Tour guide, Elena, was the...More

Yes, there are a great number of beautiful churches in St. P. and Moscow, but this one takes your breath away. The entrance fee is not that expensive and its worth seeing it. Plus the story behind this beautiful building speaks to the true love...More

This church is definitely more beautiful on the outside than the St. Basil's Cathedral. It almost looks similar but has more colors and its location besides a water stream makes it look serene and picturesque.

The church is like all orthodox churches full of riches and provides some nice sights. Good for a quick visit. As a hint, do use the ticket machines rather than the counter as there are significantly less queues

Very worthwhile visit, both inside and outside. Instead of murals inside, there are mosaics. Absolutely incredible.

To me this is quintessential St. Petersburg. Passion, colour and great sense of history. It is not possible to visit here and not be moved.

Interesting that it is called a church, because it has never been a church, but was merely built in the shape of one. It was and is a memorial. Nevertheless, as many other people have said, it is spectacular, almost completely covered internally with mosaics,...More

You don't need a visa to visit sites or explore St. Petersburg if you are within the 72 hour excursion limits. Just purchase tickets at the kiosk in front of the church to gain entrance. I have a 3 year visa, but never... More
