I did not realize the strong ties Russia had with the Byzantine empire. Western historians claim it is dead and does not exist. Visiting the The Monument to the Millennium of Russia, proved that Byzantium is alive and well. The Monument was built in 1862 to commemorate 1,000 years of Russian history. I was impressed with the large Byzantine crosses... More

The monument is from 1862, and is dedicated to the great man of Russia until then (but not all of them). You will like this is you have a native guide or a good guidebook.

The monument is built in the bell shape with the sculptures of people who played the most important role in russian history untill the end of the 19-th century. One may see how Alexander Nevski, Peter the greate, St.Vladimir and other remarkable russian people looked like. The monument is very symbolic.

To properly tell the story of Russia available from this structure, you really need an experienced guide. We had one who was excellent and it took him a good 45 minutes to explain everything covered here. It really is amazing how such a complicated history can be contained in one monument.

really great, reflecting people who influenced our history over past centuries - Tsars, heroes, poets, warriors....a good thing for Russians to check their historical skills and recognize figures on the Monument ;-)

In many respects, this is the “crown jewel” of the Novgorod Kremlin. Russians consider that their country was born in 862 when Rurik, a legendary Scandinavian chieftain came to the region and built a fort near the present-day city, after being invited by the local tribes to establish order following years of internecine fighting. One thousand years later, a competition... More
