This is a lovely small church not far from Tolstoy's house. A very old church but lovely with a fine set of gold domes.

Here in the Khamovniki District, in the street named after the great russian and world writer, Lev (Leo) Tolstoy, the man so opposed to the russian church and religion, we found this pearl of russian architecture, representing the Church of Sainte Nicholas, the Wonderworker. No wonder, it is named to honor Saint Nicholas, the Wonderworker, since the buildings of the... More

Unfortunately, I arrived early in the morning, as it was opening and calling for morning service. I asked if I could photograph around the church from inside the churchyard walls ( not inside the church). Perhaps I wasn't understood -entirely possible-... More

We wanted to see as many as possible of Moscow’s lovely and unique churches. This was another treasure, the wonderfully ornate St Nicholas of the Weavers. We got our first views of the green and golden spires and domes over the lush trees, which were fabulous. The green and maroon decoration is so attractive. Its quiet location relatively away from... Staying in Khamovniki

Neighbourhood Profile
Khamovniki
Khamovniki could be considered a city of its own – here it’s possible to find some of Moscow’s most important cultural institutions such as the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the Novodevichy Convent and Trubetskikh Estate, great sport locations such as Luzhniki stadium and aqua complex, and long and beautiful Luzhniki embankment. Pick your preferred form of transport to explore the area – bicycle or river cruise during the summer and taxi in winter as many of the great places are situated beyond a short walk.
