Incredibly beautiful monastery and whole complex around it !

This monastery has many buildings that are all looking very old and tired and are in desperate need of refurbishment. They are currently doing a lot of building work in the grounds so be prepared to get a little dirty when walking around. The main church must be viewed inside as it has a spectacular alter.

We stayed at that time in 2002 in Hotel Sputnik in Leninski Prospect ( Leninski Avenue) and had been told on some occasion that relatively close to our place of dwelling was located Donskoi Monastery. We visited this spot, taking the bus ride, since wanted to see the parks, the streets, the buildings, the people going by, instead proceeding underground in... More

I visited the monastery only because I wished to see Solzhenitsyn's grave, but was absolutely stunned by the whole place. It is a beautiful and tranquil haven not far from the centre of the city. A short walk from Shabulovskaya metro station - turn right out of the station, heading south, then first right and soon you will see the... More

This place is a still working monastery in Moscow. The area is larger than Danilov or Andronikov, and encompasses a temple, a cemetery and some other service buildings still used by clergymen. This is an active place of worship, so there is no ticket, and it is very authentic. I recommend coming here for a full immersion in Russian costumes.... More

we were fortunate to visit during an Easter service which was special. But the most special part of the visit was seeing all the old gravestones that have been rescued and preserved in the yards around the monastery

Donskoi Monastery is situated more or less close to the metro station "Shabolovskaya", but you need to know the way to it, otherwise you will be lost. In the Soviet times it was made a museum of architecture, which not only saved it from the destruction, but allowed to be a collection point for many relics of other destroyed churches.... More

Though I personally liked it less than Novodevichy Convent, it is still worth a visit. Recently refurbished, the buildings and gardens are well taken care of. An old medieval cemetery is actually a nice walk and is atmospheric. Four stars are given because of a slight dis-balance between time taken to get there and time required to visit the whole... Donskoi Monastery was a great place to visit - not too hard to find and easily accessible via metro. I didn't know but you have to pay a small fee if you want to take pictures. The cemetery has a lot of good places to take some nice pics as well as two churches within the compound. When I went... More

This place is historical and atmospheric. I lived in Russia as a foreigner for more than 15 years, and this is one of my favourite spots. Also the Petropavlovsky Monastery on the Petrovka which is not listed as a separate site.
