The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Russian: Музеи изобразительных искусств им. А.С. Пушкина) is the largest museum of European art in Moscow, located in Volkhonka street, just opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The International musical festival Svyatoslav Richter's December nights has been held in the Pushkin museum since 1981. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts holds one of Russia's largest collections of foreign art from ancient times to the present day. Its modern presentation introduces visitors to the Museum's extensive study collections of toned plaster casts reproducing works of Graeco-Roman art, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Museum also houses original paintings and sculpture, drawings and examples of decorative and applied art. In the halls on the ground floor original works of art are displayed from Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome, together with European paintings ranging in date from the 8th to the 8th centuries. Two halls, known as the Italian and Greek Courtyards, contain casts. The halls on the first floor display for visitors casts of art works from Ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The halls, hung with paintings, exhibit works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Known for its outstanding temporary exhibitions, this museum also has an impressive permanent collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art.

I booked the tour of the Pushkin expecting to see the antiquities collections. Surprise for me! The tour was all about the Impressionist and post impressionist paintings and art collections. The collections were magnificent!

Another surprise gallery. During the Soviet era a significant portion of the Grand Masters and Impressionist collection were shared with Moscow and ended up here. Unlike the Heritage which is very crowded this place is quiet and you can have quiet time appreciating the Monets...More

While many of the exhibits are plaster casts of famous sculpture, there is a lot of original art, with an amazing collection of Impressionist and modern art. Some of the antique collections are also well worth seeing. And the temporary exhibitions are typically world class,...More

We mostly were interested in the building with the Impressionist art in it. And we were not disappointed at all with what we saw there. Truly is worth seeking out and visiting.

Puskin Museum of Fine Arts is walkable from Red Square, but to save time, we took the Metro because the red line has a Metro station (Kropotkinskaya) very close to it. We bought tickets to the main building at the art gallery, not online, and...More

Loved how the gallery displayed it collection. Very accessible, not too crowded and very respectful patrons. We had a great couple of hours / just right and well worth the time. There are some lovely "companion pieces" of works in D'Orsay in Paris
