This monastery on the riverside is one of the most sacred places in Russian history. It is this place that in 1613 the Russian boyars or nobles decided to end the “Time of Troubles” by inviting a 18-year old Mikhail Romanov to be the next...More

There's a story to the monastery, back in the early 1600s, as the place for the first Romanov czar being hidden away (as a teenager before coronation) during the Polish-Lithuanian wars and... so the story goes... no one wanted to be czar -- so it...More

Very beautiful monastery. Situated by the river with wonderful view on it. Lots of very ancient and well kept items of Orthodox art inside the temple and other buildings.

Absolutely amazing. Seriously, no words. My suggestion is to go there as soon as possible. It opens at 10 AM. They give you free scarves in order to enter the monastery.

One of the most beautiful and well preserved and restored old Russian churches. The place is not big so 1-2 hrs will be enough for a visit. Make sure to use a local guide - they have some good stories about this place.

We enjoyed touring this large monastery with its beautiful church and associated museums. 20 min walk from city center across the bridge over the Kostroma River. Also on bus route 14. Skirts provided for women who need them.
