After short excursion to floating islands of Uros I still had several hours to departure so I'd decided to wander around the town of Puno. A cool morning gave way to a hot midday so slowly, without a rush, I climbed up the street in direction of local Plaza de Armas. I'd already noticed that nearly every town and city in Peru has its own main square or, to be more precise, parade ground, to which the city name was added. To be honest, I didn't expect to find such a huge edifice in place like Puno. Actually, Cathedral of Puno is located on the west side of the city, between Plaza de Armas de Puno and Parque Santa Rosa, Despite the weekend there was group of workers in the square cutting paving tiles and filling the whole place with noise and dust. But nobody seemed to care about it. The Cathedral was built in 18th century in Baroque style with two massive towers flanking the main entrance and little dome in the rear part of edifice. The facade of the cathedral facing the square is richly decorated with two niches on the both sides of main entrance that contains sculptures of saints or disciples, or perhaps evangelists, as both of them holds open books. The side entrances are also decorated with carved arches and cornices. Unfortunately, the door were closed so I couldn't check how the Cathedral looked from the inside. Still, it is the most impressive building in Puno. In my humble opinion.

A very impressive Catedral which dates back to 1775 but was destroyed by fire in 1930 but took till 1964 to re-open? Officiated by Pope Paul VI and I can safely say, they did a good job. Very impressive main altar and a nice interior with colourful side altars. Bought some candles from the local ladies out the front and lit to send prayers to sick back home. Something I like to do around the world on visits. Very nice to see the Church open & available to the public to view & admire.

It's nice to visit if you have time. Puno doesn't really have much left to offer but definitely it is a pretty visit.

Very beautiful cathedral in the center of the Plaza de Armas. Worth seeing if you are doing something other than the lake in Puno.

The Puno Cathedral or Catedral Basílica San Carlos Borromeo, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Puno. The baroque church was built in 1757 and commands the western side of the Plaza de Armas. The intrickly carverd facade features both pagan and Christian motifs. The interior however, is more spartan than you’d expect from the well-sculpted facade. The centerpiece is the silver-plated altar, which, following a 1964 visit by Pope Paul VI, has a Vatican flag to its right. Though not as grand as some of the other Cathedrals in Peru, it is still worth a look-see for the finely dressed statues and decorated altars. It's in the Plaza de Armas, bythe way it was under construction during my visit. :-(
Also known as Catedral Basílica San Carlos Borromeo.
It is in the Andean Baroque architectural, beautiful, and it's totally worth the visit.

This church is very bare and cannot compare to those in cuzco or arequipa. However, there is not much to see in puno so if you have time to kill by all means stop and visit it.

The only redeeming thing about Puno is that it's on Lake Titicaca. I know that sounds terrible, but unfortunately it's true. I'm really glad we went here at the first of our trip and not at the end. Anyway - the cathedral is very nice, and we were lucky enough to be there on a Sunday when they had a nice little procession going on with the local band - and they brought out the "head of Christ" to the front steps of the Cathedral. there was much pomp and ceremony. the Cathedral also had a very nice altar inside .

We will be in Puno on the afternoon/evening of May 19. Is there a Mass on Sunday evening? If not, where can we attend a Sunday evening Mass in Puno?
Thank you

I'm not 100% sure, but most South American countries would have mass on Sunday evening.
