This is a perfect example of how to make a mountain drive feel safe for people who have problems with heights! Cleverly constructed walls take away frightening depth views from drivers. Clear road signs and plenty of places to stop and take photographs: I was impressed! The tourist office at the bottom next to the police post is worth visiting.... More

If you want to see what 250,000,000 years of geology looks like then you have to take the balcony walk to the ruined villages. It's about a 3-4 hour round trip and worth every minute.

You have never seen terrain like this. Lonely Planet called Oman's mountains otherworldly and that about covers it. It is difficult to get up - you HAVE to have a 4x4 or you'll be turned back. (Marks car hire in Oman airport were great) It is well worth the trip from Muscat though, gives a totally different view of life... More

It was a nice journey. From muscat/Alkhuwair to the place it took 2.5 hours journey. Road is good. But unexpected bends and narrow bends you can see. Because of that recommended proper 4*4 vehicle to find before you start the journey. There is a police post which they are checking the vehicles and not allowing you to go if it... More

Drove through this beautiful region on the way to the hilltop hotel Alila. To access this area, you're required to have a four-wheel drive vehicle. All others are prohibited.

The best way to experiance Omani mountains and unforgetable sceneries! Not good if you're scared of heights. If you don't have enough 4x4 driving experience, go for a jeep tour with one of the local operators. Villages in the middle of nowhere, friendly locals, breathtaking views. Make sure to take snacks and water with you and fill up the petrol... More

It's truly breathtaking and the drive is completely Worth it. However be warned that "normal" cars cannot go up, you need a 4x4. They charge a good amount too.

Whilst not as spectacular as jebel shams, this is a good place to go if you want an easily accessible taste of omans mountains. The road up the mountain is fully paved, although you can only drive up it in a 4x4 (police checkpoint at bottom). We enjoyed visiting the mountain villages, which perch precariously on the cliff sides. Al... More
