Getting your permit from Dept of Wildlife, will give you a map and details of what to expect along this tour. It would be a good idea if you stopped at each beacon and read the description. There is so much info and so much to see that you will be surprised at the beauty and little secrets learnt. Go... More

The Welwitschia Plains are part of the Namib desert - dry waterless and hot, mile after mile. But here is found a most ugly but remarkable plant that has survived for thousands of years and is thriving, although it looks like nothing more than a pile of old garden rubbish. If you are keen on plants and their environment you... More

We had visited the Goanikontes oasis and surrounding moon landscapes and decided to take the Welwitschia turn-off to look for these fascinating plants. The road is good and before long we saw them and could take some wonderful photos. Not to be missed!

There are no words to describe this drive!!! It is absolutely Breathtaking. The lichens, the moonscape and the Welwitschia that is more than 1 500 years old, this drive was awesome and a million times worth it. Remember to take a bottle of water with and pour some on the lichens to see them unfold and change colour. They are... More

So happy to see some of those amazing plants..as i know the are a very sensitive beings on this earth..and they existence is in real danger. Hopfuly they will not extinct and they could be a good billboard of the eternal times.

You can easily find these plans not far from the road in various areas of the plains around Swakopmund, and they are worth a look (I'm not sure that it is worth planning or paying for a self drive map). These plants grow extremely slowly and are many hundreds of years old. They look prehistoric. I would suggest asking locally... More

Poorly signposted, most of the numbered beacons are missing or invisible. The map provided with the necessary permit that you must purchase in swakopmund is meaningless & downright confusing. The welwitscia plants are different for sure but it's difficult to justify the time distance & effort required to view them . Never found the dollar trees or wagon cart ruts.... More

Very interesting drive to the giant Welwitschia. Hard to imagine that these plants are so old and manage to survive in such harsh conditions. The road was an adventure but in general was not too bad.

If you are a plant or nature enthusiast, a visit to this fossil plants, fount nowhere else on earth, is worth the drive. Permits and a self drive map and information sheet for N$70 made it a great outing. Read up about this miracle plant before you go! The road is gravel and sand but our car handled it easily....
