The first part of the drive is great, but you do get a good shake and rattle for some of the way. These plants are incredible - surviving for 2000+ years. They were even flowering when we went to have a look!

We visited these amazing plants on a cruise ship bus tour - out to the Namib desert. I loved seeing these plants and I strongly recommend that you see this unique plain as a part of a bigger multi-site tour. The Welwitchia plant – These rare desert growers are found only in the Namib desert and grow for 1500 years... More

The plants are very interesting and worth a visit. The main dirt road in was good, but the road between the moonscapes and the Welwitchia plants is not great at all.

This was an amazing drive full with Welwitschia plants and Lichen. It was breathtaking! And the moon-landscape is not something you want to miss!

You will learn a lot about the Welwitchias and the geography where they grow. Make sure you buy a permit at the NWR office in Swakopmund (Bismarck St/Nujoma Av). The start of the drive is kind of hard to find.

Getting your permit from Dept of Wildlife, will give you a map and details of what to expect along this tour. It would be a good idea if you stopped at each beacon and read the description. There is so much info and so much to see that you will be surprised at the beauty and little secrets learnt. Go... More

The Welwitschia Plains are part of the Namib desert - dry waterless and hot, mile after mile. But here is found a most ugly but remarkable plant that has survived for thousands of years and is thriving, although it looks like nothing more than a pile of old garden rubbish. If you are keen on plants and their environment you... More

We had visited the Goanikontes oasis and surrounding moon landscapes and decided to take the Welwitschia turn-off to look for these fascinating plants. The road is good and before long we saw them and could take some wonderful photos. Not to be missed!

There are no words to describe this drive!!! It is absolutely Breathtaking. The lichens, the moonscape and the Welwitschia that is more than 1 500 years old, this drive was awesome and a million times worth it. Remember to take a bottle of water with and pour some on the lichens to see them unfold and change colour. They are... More
