I know that it's a rehabilitation centre for animals, so it's supposed to replicate the jungle. But it's a very sad place from a tourist perspective. What really hit me in my heart was the sad look in the eyes of a very handsome and...More
Although the place can be a bit sad, as there are many animals in cages, the centre does a really good effort to keep the animals as happy as possible.
They have to stay for a period in the centre before they can be released.
The centre talks a lot about conservation and rehabilitation of animals but I couldn't look past the terrible facilities that the animals are housed in. The orangutans enclosures were quite distressing. I understand that many have been rescued from worse conditions but the 2 males...More
No way you would miss an orangutan as this is a rehabilitation centre. You get to see other animals such as Sambir Deer, Porcupine, Asian Sun Bear, Crocodile (in enclosure) and some birds including the Rhinoceros Hornbill of Sarawak. Get to bath at Sungai Rayu...More
I was recently thinking about my time at Matang as a volunteer and decided to check out the reviews on Tripadvisor.
I am very saddened by the poor reviews for this centre; I felt I had to have a say.
I volunteered at this centre...More
This was part of a package tour and it was our first exposure to wildlife in Sarawak. This was unfortunate as it was a sad experience for us.
Our guide had explained the role of the Centre and explained why most of the animals were...More
I’ve seen a lot of negative comments about the conditions of this center, but I think you really have to take into consideration where you’re at before you judge. I think they are doing a great job with the resources that they have.
This place is supposed to be a rehabilitation centre but unfortunately, it’s more like a zoo in disguise. A poorly-maintained zoo to be exact. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED. Was recommended by the people from Semenggoh Wildlife Centre to visit this place but turned out to be...More
They call themselves a rehabilitation center, but all I saw was a poorly maintained Zoo.
There was a small leopard in a tiny cage, monkeys were walking in circles from lack of space and loneliness, and I did not see any signs of rehabilitation! All...More
Had planned to visit Matang due to its recommendation in the lonely planet guide (no idea why it’s in there) and was gravely disappointed. It’s advertised as a rehabilitation centre for endangered animals. The conditions they were kept in were appalling, small cages and a...More
If you are dropped off at the front steps of the Matang Wildlife center, and you can walk some, then it should be fine. There isn't much walking. Much less than at Semmogong (I can't remember how to spell it) Rehab Center.
