- Peter BongKuching, Malaysia2 contributionsBeautiful Bako National ParkThe sea was quite calm as the boat approached the Park headquarter. The tide was low and we had to disembark at Telok Assam beach. Taking off the shoes and jump into the cool sea water was a great experience. The trip was very satisfying because it seemed that the animals were waiting for us, a Proboscis monkey walking on the ground, Silvered leaf monkeys in one harem, a family of Borneo Bearded pigs, a green viper and a naughty mother macaque who fearless jumped on to the visitor's table at the cafeteria to grab the remaining food left on the plate. The hiking to Telok Pandan Besar was great although tiring under the morning hot humid weather. However, it was worthwhile considering the hike was an exercise.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 February 2024
- Matt THertfordshire, United Kingdom71 contributionsWell worth it. Highly recommend. Very Hot.Went on the day trip to this great place. Saw lots of wildlife within minutes of arriving by boat. The boat transfer is fun and about 20 mins. Wonderful natural national park to visit. Just like being in the jungle!! You could spend several days if you were to walk all the trails available. Caution- it is Very hot and Very humid, some trails are not easy if you’re elderly, overweight or bad mobility issues. Highly recommended. Top tip— get a guide to go with you.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024
- NinasunloverLondon, United Kingdom892 contributionsWhat a fantastic day in the jungle wildlife spottingWe had a tour booked here our guide got us to the boat and we bounced along to the national park..when you jump off on the beach your feet will be in the sea, be prepared. As soon as we walked towards the hall to wash our feet a proboscis monkey was waiting in the trees with the bearded boars and their little ones running around the beach... perfect start. We walked around the "homestay" area and spotted silver leaf monkeys. We then continued to one of the main trails which ends at the beach but is the same route back. My parents are in their 70s and some parts of the trail needed more bending and cautious footing, they did it but having a guide was useful. It's not a path as such it's jungle with tree roots, small wooden ladders, rocks etc but definitely worth the effort...the humidity is insane take more water than you think you will need, we had about 3 bottles each for the day. We were lucky enough to see a family of macaques and their babies on the trail back and a few more proboscis monkeys in the same vicinity which is apparently rare. We saw snakes and a flying lemur too. Over lunch we were treated to another family of silver leaf monkeys entertaining us outside and a cheeky macaque stealing lunch boxes. The food was ok but some of the chicken was dry. After this we did another small trail mostly on a wooden path but didn't see so much here just one snake. Well worth a day out! We spent around 7 hours here with our guide.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 March 2024
- Monique C9 contributionsGreat place but could be costly for solo travellersThe park is nice with a few trails you can do although it's not possible to do all the trails in 1 day. We did the board walk near the accommodation and the Lintang Trail which was quite interesting but can be steep at some places. The wildlife we saw were the proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs, pit vipers, all kinds of birds and insects. We didn't see the Silver leaf langurs unfortunately. If you are staying overnight, you could do the night tour and see more. The accommodation is very basic and it's best to book a private room. The dorm we stayed in was very cramped. Blankets and towels are not provided. There were 2 of us and the boat fare was RM200 each way. - total RM400 for 2 persons. If you are 1 or 2 persons only, go there early in the morning to find other people to make a group of 4 (or maybe 5) who will return together with you if possible, because if you don't do that then you will end up paying a lot. You cannot go there hoping to find someone to share a boat for the return journey because the return boat fare must be paid at the time you depart for Bako. Therefore it makes sense to try to arrange your own small group of 4 or 5 rather than go alone unless you have booked a tour. This was 5 months ago in October 2024. I don't know if they have increased the boat fare or changed the terms. Food at the canteen there is expensive for what it is, especially the buffet which is offered when they are expecting many visitors. On weekdays, you may be able to order from a menu and get warmer or freshly cooked food - although not necessarily better. If you are just going for the day, you may want to bring your own snacks or buy some food from the local stalls near the jetty before getting on the boat. Pack your own disposable fork and spoons if you are doing that. The only water sold there is Reverse Osmosis water and they also have soft drinks. If you prefer to drink something else, buy it from Kuching or bring lots of your own water.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 March 2024
- MayankLondon, United Kingdom213 contributionsUnique and full of wildlifeWe were excited to visit Bako national park and it didn’t disappoint! This is a very unique and beautiful national park with diverse wildlife. You don’t have to venture far from the HQ to see the wildlife. There are several hiking trails around the park. Our only regret is not spending the night at Bako.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 April 2024
- Tony M441 contributionsDay Trip to BakuBaku is a beautiful park with plenty of wildlife. We saw Silver Leaf monkeys, Proboscis Monkeys, Long Tail Macaque Monkeys, Flying Lemur, Bearded Pig plus assortment of crabs, lizards etc. We did a day trip from Kuching so 30-45 mins via road and 30 mins via boat. The problem for us was it was a very hot and humid day and the day trip people do 2 walks which are 10:30 - 12:00 and 12:30 - 14:00. So we were walking in the hottest part of the day. Given the choice again I would suggest it is better to overnight in Baku so you can walk when it is cooler as well as doing a night walk. We were glad that we saw Baku and the different types of eco systems that exist there but it was a very hot trek.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2024
- Fiona KLondon, United Kingdom3,137 contributionsAn exciting day of adventureWe had a fabulous day out with a guided with Don from CPH Travel. We had an enjoyable boat trip from Bako village to the park with stunning scenery passing fishing platforms on the way there. As it was low tide we had to wade from the boat to the beach. After Don had done the registrations we started our walk. The beauty of having a guide is they are in contact with all the other guides as to where the wild life is and we saw wildlife we would not have seen had we done the trip with out a guide. We saw ghost crabs, bearded pigs, silverleaf monkeys (with an adorable baby) a flying lemur sleeping high up a tree trunk (I would never have spotted that one if walking past on my own) and learned lots of information about the wildlife and vegetation we saw in the park. The rainforest is stunning. We had been forewarned about bringing water so came prepared. We wore hiking boots but the one thing that caught me off guard is although I head read plenty of comments about the heat and humidity I did know how it would affect me until I was there. My feet swelled up and towards the end of the walk it felt like I was walking barefoot on broken glass as I had such bad cramp in my foot despite loosening my bootlaces. When we got to the beach we were walking to Don arranged for a boat to take me and my husband back to the information centre where we met up with the others for lunch. On that boat trip we saw probosicus monkeys and enjoyed seeing the park from the sea. It was worth the extra money for the boat for those views of the monkeys alone. After lunch we started on a second walk but had to cut that short when our guide got a message saying a storm was on the way and the boatmen all wanted to be away by 3.00 so we quickly headed back to the boats and raced back to the village. The storm broke literally five minutes after we started heading down the road back to Kuching. A very exciting day.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 September 2024

We took bus no 1 from basically in front of Grand Margherita hotel in Kuching and everything went smoothly. We stayed for 2 nights in chalet and would have liked to stay for at least one more night. It was quiet after the daytrippers leaved at 3 pm. Because we had kids with us (4 and 7 yo), we hiked only the beginnings of trails and then back to HQ, only did the Teluk Delima trail all the way to the mangrove beach. Kids also played in small river on the beach and had great time. We spotted three species of monkeys (incl. proboscis) and a flying lemur around the HQ and chalets, so there is no need to do long hikes to see those (and bearded pigs who were almost always present). Besides fauna, the biodiversity of palms in park and overall scenery was extraordinary. Overall, Bako NP was amazing, especially when it was raining.

Took a day trip to Bako National Park. Unfortunately, we had a very rainy day, but still very much enjoyed the trip. Hired a Grab to take us to the jetty, where we got speedboat tickets (40 RM) per person (20 RM each way). Didn't see any crocs or proboscis monkeys, but did see one bearded pig and several langurs and macaques. Did self-guided hikes. Trails were a bit challenging, but a lot of fun. Highly recommend.

Just a short gateway from city bustles, taking a speed boat crossing over river and sea to reach the island Bako. Surrounded with beautiful Rocky Mountains, forest wild animals mainly wild boars. Able to spot a snake too. Staying there one night was great as you get to see the sunset until what ever time you want, it was just peaceful and an absolute beauty.

Great day trip! Don’t do an expensive organized Tour, just organise it yourself. Get a grab from the city (35rm) and go to the the registration Office. Get tickets for the boat (boat for 5 people is 100rm for 5pax, you can share the total with other travellers just wait till more arrive). Entrance to the park is 20 rm. Jetty was not crowded or anything it was very well organized. We decided to hire a Guide at the registration Office for 150 rm ( Guides have a small booth there where you can hire them).
Boat trip to the park was nice and we did a couple of hikes in the park. We saw alot of animals mainly Thanks to the Guide. He also explained alot about the local tree’s, wildlife etc. Totally worth the price.
There is a small restaurant in the park where you can get lunch, drinks and use the toilet. Don’t expect too much, it’s basic.
In the afternoon we hiked to a different beach Where the boat picked us up to go to the sea stack rock. We were the only boat there and took some nice pictures. The boat took us back to the restaurant area (this extra trip costed 25rm per person). After this we returned to the registration office. Tried to get a grab back to the city but grab wouldn’t come out here for the return trip. One of the locals hanging around the Office drove us back for 50rm.

There are numerous tours available, but if you have your own car it’s certainly cheaper to do it yourself and you don’t really miss that much
We drove about 45 minutes from our base, north of Kuching on decent roads, it was well signed, although we did miss the port entrance the first time, but after asking a local, he directed us the the free port car park. The car was totally safe their, we walked into the main building and there was enough locals to show us how to buy the park tickets and also for the local boat transfer. Total for 2 people for the day was 240 ringgit (aboutÂŁ48) the tours were charging 4 times that amount, although they did include lunch!!!
After the 20 minute boat transfer we registered with the park, signed it and we’re given information about the various trails, we opted for the 800 metre trail, sounds easy, but in the heat and with the terrain it took us about an hour to reach one of the other beaches. Tired and hot we were rewarded with the pictures below.
Lovely full day and so pleased we did it ourselves as we could dictate the pace

We decided to arrange a day trip ourselves, to save money. We got No. 1 bus from Kuching to Bako Boat Terminal for 1RM PP (about 1 hour). Then we waited for more people to arrive, to share a boat with (max 5) we managed to get a group of 3 so it cost only 40RM PP return boat trip. The park entrance fee is 20RM PP.
The boat ride was really nice (about 20 mins). Arrived on beach, registered at HQ where they gave us a map and advice about trails. We did Teluk Paku trail, really nice and ends up at a scenic, secluded beach. We saw Silver Lingurs on the trail, then on the boat trip back managed to spot Proboscis monkeys.
Overrall we spent 124RM for 2 people, inclusive of transport to and from Kuching. This is so much less than paying for a tour, and there was plenty of helpful people without having a guide, such as the boat driver and the staff at HQ.
We went late morning, but I'd recommend going early morning to get more for your money and more chance of spotting wildlife.

Although Bako national park is only an hour or so outside of Kuching it’s definitely deserves more than a day visit. It’s an exciting adventure just getting out there by car, then boat ride and staying at the park , with a local guide to show you around will make the experience complete. We got there around 11 had a quick lunch in the simple cafeteria, then headed out for a few hours walk in the midday humidity through an old forest jungle.
There are long snouted pigs and their offspring running throughout the grounds, digging up roots, looking for grubs, wherever they can. We hiked to the other side of the peninsula to a wide-open, sandy beach, and saw just a few macaque monkeys. Closer to the ranger station we saw a family of proboscis monkeys moving through the trees,
Our rooms were simple but comfortable the beds were rather hard but the air conditioning worked well. It was definitely a relief
We went for another short walk , through the jungle in over some primary forest and mangroves , after resting a bit ….had dinner, and went once more for a night walk, which we then found all sorts of small lizards and insects spiders and catfish in the stream. we also witnessed a flying langur ? I think, , he climbed up the tree at 6:15 and flew to a nearby tree on cue, just like our God said he would .
That was the highlight of the evening. The next day we took off for a extremely steep but rewarding hike up to an open area where we saw many different types of pitcher plants really beautiful, variations all along this high clearing.
We returned about 11 o’clock, and had another encounter with the proboscis monkeys much closer this time, headed back to the ranger station and head our final meal and prepared for our departure around 2 PM. It was well worth the overnight stay in order to see the full range of wildlife and activities.

It is a national park that is almost obligatory to see, more or less it takes one day to see it well, you can even stay to sleep in some authorized areas.
The entrance fee is more or less 20 euros per person, you have to take an individual boat or one for 4-6 people, otherwise you have to pay in full even if you only go alone.
During the tour they warn you about some things that you cannot do because they pose a risk to your life and there are signs that warn you.
The views are impressive and if you are lucky you can see everything from crocodiles to various types of monkeys.
A big drawback is the fact that there are few Grabs or taxis in the area so you have to try to leave a half-arranged return trip for them to pick you up again.

One of the amazing place to relax yourself especially after few days busy working. Take a car for about 50 minutes distance from city centre to reach Muara Tebas village ,and then take a boat 15 minutes.
The nature environment with great small size wild animals and plants.Besides unpolluted seaside just aside.
The visitors are encouraged to learn more about some rare creatures in order to teach young and next generation .

We had a wonderful guide, “Muhammad”, at Baku National Park in late December 2022. He’s an older gentleman who normally fishes, but he was a great guide. We don’t know his last name. We were “assigned” to him at the Government Boat Dock in the mainland to guide us on Baku.
I’m not sure how to get him as your guide. Maybe contact him at his WhatsApp number: +60 17-828 3508???

grazie
