Although many say that this is not the most important and interesting attraction of the city, all tourists still come to this tower. Why, everyone comes there, from the Victoria Memorial and begins their acquaintance with the city and the island! The 18-meter clock tower is one of the iconic places of the island and one of its calling cards. The memorial began to be erected in 1897 in honor of the 60th anniversary of the accession to the throne of the Queen of England, who was already very elderly at the time of construction. It was started to be built with the blessing of the local authorities by a local Chinese millionaire, a respected citizen of Georgetown, Chi Chen Yeok. The design called for the monument to be 60 feet high, one foot for each year of the queen's reign. But something didn’t work out, was there not enough money? The next year came and the next, and the turret was still unfinished. All the symbolism in the footage turned out to be unnecessary. And only after the death of the queen in 1901, the tower was completed and opened in 1902, already in memory of Queen Victoria.
The tower was built in the Moorish style - with beautiful wall carvings, figured columns and other elements of Maghreb architecture. The clock on the tower is working, shows the exact time and rings melodiously.

While walking around George Town we came across the Clock Tower on a very prominent position, very impressive at first sight so had to go and find out what it was all about .
Built between 1897 & 1902 with money given by a very generous businessman Mr. Cheap Chen Eok it commemorates Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
Loved the architecture of the tower and the meaning behind the gift to the town .
Well worth a visit

The clocktower is located near the international ferry terminal but certainly not worth a special trip unless you are in the nearby vicinity. The clocktower was constructed by the Chinese community to commemorate the Queen's diamond jubilee, and was 60 feet tall, one foot for every year of her reign. Th clock leans slightly to one side due to bombing during the war. Unfortunately the queen died before it was completed.

A monument like this should be a towering feature. May be it was. But is now shadowed by non monumental building. Pity

I’m not sure how I feel about the new modern fountain sculpture juxtaposed against the old and traditional British Clock tower. In any case it hardly warrants “tourist attraction” status.
The fountain is an interesting design and the Clock Tower is a piece of Penang history, apparently built to commemorate the reign of the fabulous Queen Victoria of England. You will probably pass this intersection at some point of your journey around Penang, but don’t bother to make a special journey.
There are too many other interesting sites in Georgetown and Penang to keep you occupied.
I almost got myself run over as I crossed the busy intersection in the rain to get these shots.

One of the interesting colonial landmarks in Georgetown is the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower (Jubilee Clock Tower) found in the centre of the small roundabout at King Edward's Place, at the junction of Light Street and Beach Street come together. It is just south of Fort Cornwallis and quite simple to find.
The tower was built in 1897 to commemorate the jubilee celebration of Queen Victoria. The base level is octagonal in shape, followed by two four-sided tiers with decorative windows and clock faces, followed by a last level of Romanesque pillars, topped by a Moorish style dome and spire. The clock tower is an interesting design and has the appearance of a layered cake, similar to some of the Christopher Wren churches in London.
Interestingly, there is a metal sculpture of a betel nut sharing space with the clock tower in the roundabout green. It is contemporary design and is supposed to represent a local Pinang fruit, This sculpture is surrounded by waterspouts and makes for a stark contrast to the earlier period clock tower.
Both the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower and the Betel Nut sculpture can be seen in just a few minutes, before or after visiting nearby Fort Cornwallis or other attractions in this area of George Town, Penang.

The tittle suggests itself due to its location which is quite a stone throw from fort Cornwallis and the jetty which exclusive huge ferry to deck onto during the transit usually en route Phuket or any islands along the route.

Dedicated to queen victoria, this clock tower is in the middle of a busy road in the heritage section of George Town. Definitely nice to look at and see but nothing else to do. Glad I saw it though

It's a clock tower with a clock that doesn't tell the correct time, nor has the correct dates of Queen Victoria's reign. Curious.

It's in the middle of a very busy intersection. Passed by this on my way to Fort Cornwallis but I was riding a rickshaw so I didn't notice if there's some plaque below it.
