The ONLY way to the top is funicular railway or 4x4 taxi
We visited Penang in June 2023. We decided to Stay at the hotel on Penang Hill going by the reviews. No one tells you that city taxis are not allowed to drive you UP or DOWN the hill (due to the hairpin bends, gradient and permits) so you either have to take the funicular railway or hire a 4x4 at the bottom. Having arrived with 2 suitcases and 2 heavy back packs the wait in the queue for the train was over 2 hours so we took an expensive taxi. Certainly an interesting ride up. Be prepared to negotiate the cost. We expected a beautiful garden area with walks and plants but the hill certainly plays on the view and attractions. The top of the hill is now VERY commercialised. There are 2 ways to go up. One by Jeep car for RM160 two ways, and the other by train for I think RM 30 or 40. We choose the second way. No long queue, minutes to be in, and others few minutes to be at the top of the hill. Penang hill is a wonderful spot to visit with family, friends or solo. Nice view to the city. Many places for photos. A lot of cafes, restaurants and photographers.

Great views - get an express ticket
There was lots of walks and a few things to do at top. The few was really good and likely we went on a fairly clear day. The ride up and down is fairly quick. I would recommend an express lane ticket. We got there at about 11am and we queued for an hour. The queue back was so much longer. Luckily you can upgrade to express at the top. We did this and it made the experience so much better.

Great Attraction to visit with Top Staff Dulasiy
This is a great Penang Attraction that no one should miss, we were travelling in a big group with young children. One of the staff Dulasiy Subramaniam was very attentive and took great care of our young children's safety. Thank you for making our Penang Hill visit a very lovely one, it was crowded on a Saturday but the staff made the difference. Even the buggy rides we took that showed us around the hill has very lovely staff who explained and took photos our group. Spot the monkeys here they are very unique

    The Penang Hill experience
Please check the weather when you decide to come to Penang Hill because I didn’t. I went in the morning knowing that there’s less people to avoid other tourists and locals. But I think, as the main tourist attraction in Penang, it is inevitable to avoid people. Everything inside Penang Hill’s attraction has a separate entrance fee which is frustrating. I opted to visit The Habitat since I don’t have anything to see due to the fog and the weather. The great thing about my whole visit is the gondola ride going to the Hill. I spend around 3-4 hours just waiting for the weather to cool down so I can see the view in the Upper Hill Side but still there is nothing.

    Cloudy at summit
Probably because the December monsoon is coming hence it was cloudy almost everyday. No view at summit so we went to The Habitat. Also no view but it’s nice to look at the plants that are endemic to Penang and the region. No luck with seeing fauna except some monkeys. Habitat is also a lot less crowded than other parts of Penang Hill. Stop by the cafe before you go to take in the fresh air and pause before you continue the rest of your day.

A little like Disney-land at the top of the funicular but once away from the crowds fabulous
Very busy - school parties as well as tourists. Best to go fast track. Very busy at the top of the funicular but once we were on the sky walk trail no crowds at all. Stunning views. Peaceful. Unfortunately bird life disappointing.

1)This is one of the TOP Tourist spots in Penang. 2)Many renovations have been done improving the site. The Train is much spacious and comfortable then the OLD one. However, ALWAYS Long waiting time !! 3)The hill top accord Some views of Penang Island; BUT not too impressive Many commercial outlets set up on hill top, But offer ordinary wares !! 4)Visit it for the sake of " Had BEEN" !!

Funicular train ride to the top is a must in Penang!
You can't really say you've been to Penang if you haven't made the trip up to the top of Penang Hill. But, it really only makes sense to go up if the weather is reasonably clear; otherwise, you're spending money for a short train ride only. The trip to the top is via Southeast Asia's longest funicular train system. The trip takes a mere 4 1/2 minutes, but it's steep and fun. For foreigners, the cost is 30 ringgit for adults and seniors for the standard fare (meaning you wait in line while all the people who paid for the "fast lane" zip past you. The cost for the fast lane is about double, but it is probably worth it for most people on busy days. The price for Malaysians is less than half that for foreigners. We found the management of the funicular was not so good as they informed us the wait for the standard line was only 30 minutes, but it turned out to be more than one hour. The views at the top were very nice and the air was refreshingly cool.

WE DID THE CAR UP TO TOP
The lines for funicular were very very long. We decided ahead of time to go directly to the botanical Gardens where there is a smaller line for suv trucks to take you to top. The ride to top was exciting like being in a race course with excellent driver. Once on top it’s a stroll around for photos and selfies . Highest point on town and worth the visit. Problems only when coming down and waiting for transport and juggling line.be aware of that part

Was in Penang for 3N4D trip. Decided to hike up Penang Hill (PH) instead of the train. Started my hike at 730am on a Sunday via the Bat Temple route. The route was very scenic passing thru a few traditional temples, lookout points, village, private durian & other orchards, flower farm. The trail was of a concrete path, well maintained and not mossy. The highlight of this trail for me was the Golden Stupas (gold spirals) perced on a hill slope overlooking penang bay. Catching the morning sun, this stupas were enchanting n beautiful. There were quite a few local hikers on this trail so i did not have any worry of being lost. There are some posted signs leading to PH at some junctions. This hike upwards till the PH food court took me about 1.5hrs.
Air up on the Hill was crisp cool breezy. Crowds started to gather when i was there at 9am. The foodcourt was packed, many for the local dessert fix. Weather was perfect and we could see till Butterworth on this clear visibility day.
I took the Heritage trail down. It is about 30% minor jungle tracks and 70% concrete steps bordering the rail track down. The local Grab driver told me its been raining almost everynight yet the tracks were not mossy and slippery. Good traction shoes and care must still be the order of the day on hill slopes. This route down was more direct but more taxing on the knees due to concrete n uneven steps. There are railings (mostly rusted but still sturdy) along the majority of the steps. The highlight of this trail down is the viewing platform of middle station and the rumbling of the train behind you. This is another 115mins down for me. There are a lot of hikers on the trail later in the morning . I encountered 2 groups of school children excl maybe about 80 people on the way down (about 10am).
I would rate the hike as safe with moderate difficulty (i do 2-4 hrs hill hike everyweekend), well maintained trails. Its recommended, if you of average fitness n enjoy the outdoors. I also encountered many types of flora & fauna, some crawlies (ants, beatles, millipedes), wildlife (squirrels, birds ). Hope you enjoy the hike like i did.

We had a great time visiting Penang Hill on the furnicular railway.
We had the fast track tickets but it didn’t seem too busy, the trains run every 30 minutes from 6.30 am until 11 pm….and it was amazing going up the steep hill through the jungle.

You get fantastic views of Georgetown from the top, it was nice and cool compared to the city and there is a temple and mosque plus lovely walks where you may see monkeys and plenty of other wildlife as the hill is a biosphere reserve.
You can take a buggy to see the colonial cottages that were used by the well off to escape the heat of Georgetown in earlier times and there are places to eat and get a cold drink.
It’s an interesting place and worth your time.

We were on an organised tour by Tui for Georgetown from the top - and it certainly did not disappoint . We had fasttrack tickets and therefore very little queuing - the funicular is pretty steep and if you are able to get into the front carriage you can admire the view as you are ascending to the top.
We had about an hour to have a look around and took the opportunity to ride one of the golf carts that take you to past the old colonial cottages. It only cost about £5 per cart for 4 people . Enough time to admire the view and have a sorbet to cool us down .

This is a must visit during your trip to Penang. Try to go around 4pm. The weather is cooling on top. My wife, MIL and two kids went on a weekend in April and there wasn’t much ppl. Remember to use the habitat buggy service (30RM) to make it even more worthwhile. Overall I would say it’s a must-try.

Went here as part of a day trip from a Tui/Marella Cruise. We went to a temple first but oh my days Penang Hill was next level. We didn't wait long for the funicular and couldn't believe how high up we went. First time I've actually felt scared at the height and steepness of travel and I've been on many a cable car / roller coaster ride.
The views from the top were awesome and we could see all the way to where our ship was docked.
We only had about an hour there due to time constraints of the day trip but well worth the time there, grounds are immaculate and views unbeatable. Not for the fainthearted.
