The bar does have a lot of history though and makes a nice change of pace from the happy hour place

As JmGreenuk says, not really a Ratebeer destination as you are unlikely to get any ticks. The bar... read more

My friends and I stumbled into the Hong Kong Bar in Georgetown. The brother/ sister owners (since 1953) Jennifer and Peter greeted us with a family like warmth. As soon as we ordered a few bottles of Tiger beer and explained that we were Americans...More

Went back after 17 years when I served at butterworth in the army. Unfortunately the place had a fire and lost all the records for that period. Had a cold beer with my wife and two boys and talked about some old times there. Still...More

There aren’t so many places in Penang to get good beer, so you might as well drink somewhere interesting and with a little history like the Hong Kong bar. It’s been around for ages and has links going back almost 70 years with the Australian...More

We were in Penang for seven nights, and this bar was empty every night. If you are interested in military history, it may well suit you, otherwise it's a bit dingy and boring. We had one beer and couldn't drink it quickly enough.

Travelled there in 1979 with the RNZAF. The best 6 weeks in a bar I have every had. Raved about it to my partner for years whom could not understand the attraction. Then 2010 I (we) finally returned. Now he understands. So sad about the...More
