Almost a brand new temple

By preservation wise, this temple is restored to a brand new one. Although lost some of antiquity, it is still a good place to understand the early Chinese immigrants in Penang.

I have no idea what this temple looked like prior to restoration but it is fantastic in the intricacy of workmanship. It is not a large temple but it is representative of the Teochew Chinese that lived in the area.

A quiet tuck off the main road for some quiet and peace. It's a simple, beautiful, newly renovated temple.

This is an old ancestral temple for the "Teochew Chinese". It is very unique and inside, one can view beautiful ornamental screens and carvings besides the magnificent roof structure.

Recommended to visit for one hour only, but this temple is quite exquisite. A very entertaining example of visual art and color. Stop by if you have the chance, it was recently under restoration process and it looks very impressive. It is also a good example of Chinese culture not commonly in China mainland.

I am from Teochew dialect group. My dear father has been a member of this Teochew Association for many years and even served as a committee member and later as an administrator after his retirement from civil service. When I was young and in my teens, I was brought to this place (the school building next door) to train in... More

I have never seen stone worked to the level of detail and 3 dimensional effects seen in this temple! this puts the clan houses to shame. And its free!

The temple isn't large - ten or twenty minutes and you'll have explored it. But it's beautifully renovated (details of the renovation are also presented in the temple) and you'll learn a little about local Chinese ancestral tradition.

We were very fortunate to have Ms Lim Giak Siang of Penang Teochew Association, who gave us a tour on the Han Jiang Ancestral Temple which is located on Lebuh Chulia. Built in 1870, this temple received the Unesco Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award 2006 after undergoing an extensive RM1.5mil restoration and is the embodiment of Teochew architecture, culture, tradition and...
