Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It is definitely a place to visit for anyone visiting Johor Bahru from the first time. This street is fill with historical places and the food there is amazing. You can find all kinds of local crusine there. No matter you are looking for Chinese, Indian or Malay food this street has it all. It is a great place to come at night as the scenery is amazing and more food stall are open at the night.

Johor city square is the only place worth going to as a tourist in the whole of Johor. Forget about what you read about the other malls, save your $$ as this is the only standard shopping mall worth going to in Johor. All others have depilated or runned down; forget about the Zon, forget about KSL & Danga, once you arrive at these other malls, you'll feel that you cab fare wasn't worth it.
Stay around here and there's plentiful to see & do. Apart from City Sq, you can whisk by JB bazzar, Johor Zoo, waterfrontage, the main mosque, etc.

I used to live in JB 20 years ago. Wong Ah Fok was 'in transition' then. It was one of the most vile, stinking streets I've ever experienced and it hasn't really changed. Absolutely lethal to cross with very little provision for pedestrians- a nightmare if you are with children. Avoid JB unless it's to buy some counterfeit crap to take home. Spend the time getting out of the city instead- or just stay in Singapore.

People tend to visit the shops along Wong Ah Fook at nights as there are plenty of food. Providing tourist with the local culture. However, it wouldn't be too safe for families with young children, pick pocketing does happen around here, please becareful of your belongings. At nights, prostitutes line along the shop houses.
There are food during the day as well, but you wouldn't be able to experience it like you would at nights.

Walking around here will bring you the memories of the old johor bahru. Lots of shops to look at, and you can even buy some gold here since goldsmith shops are abundant here.

I cannot for the life in me understand how anyone and I mean anyone could find a redeeming feature about this street other than it's on the route out of Johor Bahru. It is dirty, hot, busy with traffic, filled with blokes who seem never to have seen a western woman. Steer clear. Please anyone who gave this more than "one" explain. I wasted a day of my life based on your reviews.

Jalan Wong Ah Fook (Wong Ah Fook Road) is by far one of the more well known landmarks of Johor Bahru. I would not go as far as to say ALL Johorians know of this famous road but I am confident that most do.
The road is named after a historical figure of Johor who established himself as a contractor who initially developed the village known as Kampung Wong Ah Fook. As a result the main road was named Wong Ah Fook Road until this day.
The Wong Ah Fook area has come a long way since the late 1800s. The earliest memory I have of the place is some time in the 1980s and 1990s. There used to be a popular hawkers stalls that were popular at night. I still recall the famous Penang Char Keow Teow that was prepared by one of the stall vendor's there.
There even used to be a wet market there back in the 1980s that my grandmother used to buy her groceries. But all of it is gone now.
In place are two massive shopping malls, City Square and Komtar JBCC. The main road which Jalan Wong Ah Fook is currently going through some upgrades. There used to be a river or a big drain beside it. But now it's covered to make way for what I can assume is a wider road.
This used to be the main road in 80s and 90s before the moved the CIQ (Customs and Immigration). Back in those days people would come here after leaving JB customs and immigration to change money at the money changers. People who took a bus across sometimes got off JB customs and walked to Jalan Wong Ah Fook to change currency and subsequently get cabs.
The pictures I have put up here show the renovation and also the old shops buildings that are still there. Some of the shop lots are still operational. I am not sure if they are going to demolish them or upgrade them.
Since I can remember Jalan Wong Ah Fook has always been with heavy car traffic. Now it's a little less surprisingly as many try to avoid this road due to the construction going on (It used to be 3 lanes, down to one at the end!) So drivers be ware!

Had been a nice place. But recently, it is just filled with foreign workers, drug addict and prostitutes hanging around the area. I dont feel safe walking there alone even in the broad daylight.
However, City Square or KSL would be of a better option.

Is there plans to build cross bridge between jalan Wong ah fook to Johor Bahru ?
Written 23 March 2016
there is no bridge along Jalan Wong Ah Fook. There is only street crossing between city square and the shophouses. there are no bridges as there is road construction in the middle of the road.
