“Gokoku” means “guarding the nation (Japan).” They were created in the late-19th century and onward all over Japan first to enshrine the soldiers who were dead in the civil wars towards the Meiji Restoration of 1868. This Shinto shrine was built to "defend the country", and was a target of worship by military personnel. The gods of the shrine are important leaders that died in war, which is why the place can be politically controversial. It's an important historical sight in Sendai and I often show it to foreigners who come to visit.
