The shrine is overrun by about 35,000 nesting sea gulls. It is fascinating to visit even though it is off the beaten track. There is a museum at the base that explains the history and there are umbrellas everywhere to share to help keep you clean. The birds are calm enough to walk by and they hardly scurry away. Don't... First thing is this place is still not infested with tourists and the sight of the droves of sea gulls flying in was really a sight to behold . Something different besides sakuras sakuras ......

Bottom line: an amazing, sensual, fantastic, and free place for viewing, hearing, and appreciating natural wonder in the form of black-tailed sea gulls. Words and pictures won't suffice -- please check it out in person. Details: I have visited five or six times since Summer 2013. What an amazing place at any time of year; but, especially true in April-May.... More
