Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Sounds like the success of your visit depends on what is currently being exhibited. The first impression you get from the outside of the building is an impressive one. A grand building set on a hillside. Even inside there are immense showing rooms. The Chagall exhibit is stunning. However, it was downhill from there. Most of the other exhibit were of photographs and most of the descriptions were in Japanese. Kind of surprising given that so many tourists come here. Honestly, for the price of the bus ticket (you can't use JR pass) and the entrance fee, it was not money well spent.

I was overwhelmed by the truly wonderful collection, including works by Shiko Munakata and Yoshitomo Nara. Of course, there were many other wonderful works. You can also directly access the Aomori dog and see it up close. It's also great that most art museums these days allow photography. I recommend visiting both museums together with the Towada Art Center. Both are truly wonderful!

It's close to Aomori Station and is a really spacious and comfortable museum. You can leisurely look at the works of Yoshitomo Nara and Shiko Munakata, both of whom were born in Aomori Prefecture. There is also a cafe. There are ruins nearby, so the location is great.

I really wanted to see Yoshitomo Nara's works so I planned a day trip.
It's convenient to take the Nebutan bus from Shin-Aomori.
The museum's location is great and there are many exhibits inside so I enjoyed them before heading home.
I recommend visiting the ruins next door during the green season.
I'd like to visit in a different season.

I'm not usually a big fan of this type of museum, but this one is definitely worth it.
It is very large and very varied. You can even participate in an activity at the end.
We just regret that there are not more languages than Japanese and English in the museum.
A bus stop is right in front of the museum.

We visited the museum primarily because of the works of Yoshitomo Nara: his angry girls, the impressive Aomori-Ken and numerous sculptures are really impressive. A wonderful surprise were large-format Chagall backdrops and a (May 2024) fantastic Frank Lloyd Wright exhibition. We had a wonderful afternoon, which you can enjoy with numerous apple specialties (apples are typical and particularly good in the region) in the in-house Cat Cafe.

I have never been to a Art museum in my life, not even in my own country. But having heard so much about Nara Yohitomo's Hula Hula Garden, I decided to make a visit there. Simple, spacious and white just about all describe the outer appearance of this museum. But it is what inside that will enthrall your senses. The museum itself is a dug out. The sentence "6 feet under" came into my mind when I reached the main entrance which is reached by a lift that goes downwards. Do not be fooled by the exterior of the museum, it's interior is spacious and the ceiling 3 stories tall. By the way, no bags allowed. They have a locker room whereby the ¥100 deposit fee is refundable when you retrieve your items. Photography is only allowed at certain very limited places only, meaning...as good as no photography allowed. Yup you can take picture of the famous Aomori Ken, only that. Personally, I like the glass art the best. The Hula Hula garden gave me a creepy feeling. Maybe I am claustrophobic, I hate dark enclosure. The house which housed the display of 3 kid sized children lying face down on a floor that was littered with flowers and books was in a box like enclosure. Meaning you will have to enter into a dark box with narrow dark alley. The only light source comes from the small narrow windows of the house.
Other than that, i enjoyed the other display of Nara Yoshitomo which were not in the dark box.
At the end of the visit, I actually felt quite artsy myself even if it was only for a few minutes. Worth a visit.

Because of the lack of snow, ski resorts were slow to open. But we were glad we came here. The highlight was the four huge stage backdrops painted by Chagall for the ballet “Aleko”.

Initially we only ventured out to Aomori Art Museum to see the huge 8.5 meter tall Aomori Ken sculpture- by Nara Yoshitomo- as he looks a lot like our Whippet and we were missing him. However the gallery is fantastic. The building is made up of series of spaces that is easy to navigate with help of the many guides around the gallery. One gallery has displayed the backdrops painted by Marc Chagall for a ballet . They are huge and overwhelming- a must see for Chagall fans. The other galleries featured more of Yoshitomo's work which were fun to see. When we visited the main exhibition was "MIFFY" yes the white cute rabbit in those children books. The exhibition showed the development of the iconic Miffy . The highlights were seeing the original hand painted version of some of the books- amazing work in gouache. There were plenty of overpriced trinkets and overwhelmed kids and big kids.
We had planned to visit the other historical places nearby but ran out of time.

how much is the entrance fee?

I think that I had to pay to access the special exhibition. It was not expensive if that was the case.

You don't need a bus. The gallery is basically on the premises of the Sannai Maruyama site. Just about 300 m from the entrance to the archeological site. Btw, the entrance to archeological site is free.

Hi we will be in aomori for 1 day in march would like to know how to get to aomori from cruise ship port aomori
Written 22 August 2015
Hi Ronald, Aomori is a small town, so distance is not much of a worry. As far as I know there are 2 ports. One is just 5 minutes walk from the Aomori railway station. This also where the Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru is berth. There is also another port, which I presume the ships from Hakodate comes in, from this port to Aomori station by taxi will be about 20 minutes. There is a friendly tourist office next to the station, where you can find help on how to access any tourist locations you want. Do enjoy the sea food, it would be crime if you miss it. Have a great trip ! Arigatou gozaimasu !
