The statue is situated on a knoll overlooking Katsurahama beach and that is the best part of it, already. In other words, I do not recommend visiting this place just to view the statue but the beach is worth it

Our tour guide informed us that this statue was built and paid for by local citizens of Kochi. Their contributions demonstrated how well respected he was indeed. We admired the strong sense of honor and dignity amongst the Kochi community. You will see this statue on your way to the beach. Worth the stop.

Ryoma Sakamoto is a hero of Kochi and a great contributor for the Meiji Restoration. If you are not familiar with Japanese history, this monument does not mean much. But for the most of Japanese, this is an interesting spot.

His life was recreated in a popular year-long historical TV drama broadcast by NHK in about 2010, with the ever-popular actor, song-writer, musician and photographer Masaharu FUKUYAMA. The bronze statue stands on a headland overlooking a wild and rugged coastline with the Pacific Ocean crashing onto a steeply banked beach with coarse sand. A foot trail leads from the statue... After a bit of a climb and swimming through a sea of locals you will find a well placed statue in an area that offers great views. try and get there in the morning otherwise the status will be backlit and harder to photograph.

This statue is perhaps interesting for Japanese people who idolize Ryoma. If you are familiar with the history and find Ryoma as fascinating as the Japanese, then it might be interesting. funny thing is that locals consider this statue very very big...its not that big...but its interesting to see the Japanese' reactions to it

If you're really in to statues of famous people or just plain like giant statues, I suppose it would be interesting, but otherwise not so much. I didn't bother lining up to see the view at his eye level.

Great museum with so much evidence about the existing story of Ryoma. You will find so many photos and letters from Sakamoto Ryoma himself (from the Teradaya Inn incident to the moment he got killed). Overall, a must visit for those who love the history of Japan!
