About
Ritsurin Garden is a superb cultural asset that conveys the characteristics of the daimyo strolling gardens that were typically seen in the 17th and 18th century. A daimyo strolling garden is a type of traditional Japanese garden in which ponds and hills are expertly constructed over a vast tract of land, and you can enjoy the garden's space as you leisurely walk around inside.

    Tranquil and elegant park
A lovely oasis with lots of surprise twists in the walk. This is a large park, with two proposed walk, we work the south ones, which is recommended. It s pretty easy walk from JR Ritsurin Station.

    Peaceful and tranquil walk
Our guide, Katsuko Yui, escorted us to this vast public garden, located about 1H's drive from Kotohira. This garden is dominated primarily by pines, both red and black -- all carefully groomed. It is dotted with small ponds filled with carp and snapping turtles. The stone walkways and bridges are like artwork. I've been to many of Japan's best parks, like Kanazawa's Kenrokuen, and this one is equal. We asked how many gardeners are necessary to maintain this park to this high a leve. We saw only two, but not trimming the trees, but transporting supplies.

One of the most beautiful gardens in Japan
One of the most beautiful gardens that I've visited in Japan. The area is vast and you can easily spend a couple of hours in there. You can take a boat ride or have a matcha in one of the tea houses. The autumn colours in November are breathtaking.

    Don’t miss this garden
This is an absolutely stunning garden. It should be in the top 3 in Japan in my opinion. Beautiful walks through wooded areas, leading to amazing views over the various ponds. The cherry trees were still flowering but it is the pines which are really impressive here, and how the landscape has been fashioned to make the most of the views. A must see in Takamatsu.

This is probably one of the best gardens I've been to. Despite being a popular tourist destination, there is still enough space to walk around since this place is huge.

Moreover, there is no "ideal" season to visit Ritsurin Garden since it's a beautiful place to visit all year round.

This city park is a treat, even on a hot day. It is full of stunningly beautiful ponds, and there’s a lovely Folk Museum. It costs 410 Yen to get in for adults and 170 for children and there is reasonably-priced parking near the NW gate. There is also parking within the park towards the SE, but we didn’t see whether or not it was cheaper. You can probably walk around the whole park in about an hour, but we spent about 3 hours here, sitting on the veranda of the folk museum, feeding the koi carp and terrapins near the Satsuki-tai gift shop (which sells fish food), and exploring all the corners of the garden. A wonderful afternoon.

We came to Takamatsu specifically to visit this landscape garden and Yashima.

We can not understand why this is not rated as one of the best gardens in Japan.

In autumn there are a few superb spots where the trees in the Japanese garden burst with color. The green of the pines and the mounds of perfectly pruned shrubs provide great photo opportunities and the red of the maples is absolutely stunning. Reflections in the ponds and the placidly swimming koi offer further scenes for photography.

Strolling around the rest of the garden is a treat. Excellent view points from the many hills look down upon reflecting ponds, bridges, and pavilions. Be sure to get a map so you will know where you are and can decide what you want to visit. Lanterns, pathways, historic trees, a few buildings of note especially an old tea house, will all attract your attention. The borrowed scenery makes the garden seem as if it is even larger and encompasses even more land than it does. As you walk around the many paths, the views constantly change adding to your enjoyment.

In addition to the Japanese garden, there is another section of the property described as a Western garden - we didn’t have time for this on this visit.

We did break for lunch at the Garden Café which is in the West Wing building of the Shokoshoreikan.

Ritsurin is huge and we could easily have spent 2 full days here and not seen it all.

Definitely one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan and one that i have now visited three times in different seasons. Probably most beautiful in Spring but also very crowded then. I preferred the place in the early Autumn when the trees are turning and the place is less busy. Also visited in Summer and it was very very green :-)

One of the most beautiful gardens in all of Japan. So many colorful koi fish and different kinds of trees and flowers. Must visit when you go to Takamatsu! Take a tram or bus from Takamatsu Station.

A 75 hectare beautifully designed garden with a lot of little lakes in the middle of the city. You could walk the most of it in 2-3 hours. Not to crowded, relaxing and very enjoyable. Easy as well since it is mostly flat

This review is for the non-garden lovers in the crowd. The ones that go to gardens because their partner wants them to. It's beautiful. Everything is meticulously perfect. The buildings you can visit are gorgeous. The view of the pond, bridge and gardens is fantastic.

Honestly, if you go to one Japanese Garden in Japan, go to this one.

I'd go again.
