Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This charming little island with the narrowest streets and friendly people is one of my favorite places in Japan. We arrived on Dec 31st, most things were closed but it was still worth just strolling around - the atmosphere is enchanting. a must.

Just 35 minutes by ferry from the pier in Takamatsu, this tiny island might well be in the middle of the Pacific. I walked on a paved pathway to visit the interesting granite lighthouse. Even though there was a wire fence across the road/path it was not locked. The hilly town is most charming with high stone walls forming canyons between the old houses. There were several outdoor art pieces still remaining on display from 2013. It is as if time has stood still on this peaceful island.

I had a day trip from Tokyo to check the town of Takamatsu. My initial intention was to visit Shoudoshima or Megijima but the queue for getting a ferry ticket at the time was unbelievably too long so I decided to pick out Megijima instead although the queue to Ogijima was still long waiting that I had to wait for 1hr to get the ferry ticket.
Anyway 40mins ferry ride from Takamatsu. The Island isn't big so you can walk around 1.5 hr to finish everything you want to see. There was art festival going then I had some nice artworks to check them out. Recommend to visit when it's art festival on going otherwise it'll be pretty nothing much there.

If you want to go a little off the beaten path, and experience something marvellous, Ogijima is an ideal day outing. Take the ferry from Takamatsu Port to Megijima and then from there go up to Ogijma. The island is small but it is famous for a few things: lots of cats, the inspiration for Battle Royale (a very popular manga/comic), and exhibits for the Triennial Art Festival.
You can walk the entire island within an hour, see a cool lighthouse, have snacks and drinks in some nice cafes, and wander through a very quaint village. Ideal for photography for both original Japanese neighbourhoods, the sea, the trees, cats, and some funky art.
Escape the crowds of tourists in the big city, take the ferries out to the sea, and feel the wind on your face. You won't be disappointed!

It was a rainy Monday, galleries on Naoshima were closed for the day, so we opted for Ogishima. This was low season, a couple of weeks before Golden Week so yes, not much was open. If not for the sustaining plain soba served at the info centre we would have been hungry indeed! However, even in the rain, the walks around the charming hilly village and out to the lighthouse were delightful. I also slogged up to the lookout and was rewarded with a magnificent stormy view over the Seto sea. Sometimes the not so picture perfect days produce the most memorable experiences.

We were there for the Setouchi Triannale and I found the island is very charming, it is very nice for a half day excursion, combined with Megijima for example.

This island, mostly known for its cats (although we have seen just a few of them) or its Setouchi Art Festival, may be at first glance small and uninteresting as it doesn't have any attractions nor open bars/restaurants or public transportation (except the ferry to Takamatsu and viceversa). However its beauty may surprise you, especially the combination of sea and mountain features, or even the symmetry between nature and modernization.
It's a perfect place for those who love walking/hiking (either around the island, maybe towards the lighthouse, or up towards the observation deck) or just stay at the beach and swim/sunbathe. Moreover, if you're fan of the book/manga/film Battle Royale, then it's a must-see!
The only tricky part is how to get here as there are only 5-6 ferries per day (one ferry per two hours; appr. 510 yen just one way). If you're going to visit it this year, I recommend to check the ferry schedule on the Setouchi Art Festival website.
I really enjoy it and the view from the top is amazing!

Ogijima is beautiful, fun, quiet. It has great art, wonderful landscape (be it the village itself or the views of the Seto Inland Sea) and above all, some of the nicest people I have ever met.
If you visit only one island in the area, it should be Ogijima.

We visited both Ogijima and Megijima and preferred Ogijima. Both islands have lots of friendly stray cats living there. Ogijima is smaller but we liked the houses built on the slopes and the narrow alleys leading to the different houses (some are in ruins n abandoned I believed). There are also various art work done on the houses and the most prominent is the interesting architecture serving like a tourist info center near the jetty. To see the lighthouse you have to walked about 30mins so unless you have time may not be worth going all the way there..
