Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Calculating the cost was very easy. You get a ticket when you get on with a number on it. At the front of the bus is a light board showing the cost to get off the bus at each stop that corresponds with the number on your ticket. very easy to figure out.

Beppu is a big city which makes walking from one sight-seeing point to another not always feasible. Kamenoi bus made our travelling as smooth as breeze. We purchased the one day Kamenoi Bus Pass, together with composite entrance tickets to 7 jigoku from Tourist Information Centre at Beppu Train Station, 900 yen for adult and 700 yen for junior school student.
We took bus no. 5 from Train Station West Gate to Umi Jigoku and the other 4, then walked to Kannawa and changed to bus no.16 to the Tatsumaki Jigoku and the remaining one. We then went back to Beppu Station on No. 16 bus again and chaged to no. 26 for our hotel. The lady at the bus information centre at Kannawa was particularly helpful. She also spoke fluent English. Buses arrived timely and the drivers were polite despite they could only expressed in Japanese. The route was scenic during Cherry Blossom season - shades of pink lined along the roads under the sun with in a vibrant and vivid manner.
We visited Beppu twice within four months' time. The pleasure in Kamenoi bus travelling is one of the reasons. Strongly recommended for travellers who want to explore this wonderful city.

Kamenoi Bus is the easiest way to get around Beppu if you are going beyond Beppu's central area east of the train station. Buses depart from both the east and west entrances to the Beppu Train Station. I find it best to use Google Maps or some other online map to see which routes to take, as often there is more than one way to get to another area of Beppu, for instance, Kan'nawa, and some routes are longer and slower than others. Kamenoi Bus also has rapid express buses to Fukuoka and Fukuoka Airport that leave from Highway 10, a 7-minute walk from the east entrance to Beppu Station. The rapid express buses require reservations; the local Beppu buses do not. Last used 8 December 2018.

It was very unpleasant to watch foreign tourists confused about how to pay, with drivers explaining things in an intimidating tone like "What is it?" or "Well, you see, so it's ⚪⚪ yen!" that were not even explanations, and when they realized they didn't understand, they made a gesture as if they were shooing them away with their hands.
I also saw a driver say "Why?" or "Huh?" to a customer who asked to put his luggage down from the back because he couldn't put it down from the front. There were several people who asked like that because there were a lot of tourists, but the driver who opened the back door with a really displeased sigh was really unpleasant.
I felt that most of the drivers with such bad attitudes were older men.
On the other hand, the kind drivers were really polite and greeted me with a smile. Among them were older men other than those mentioned above, and I regret that the rating was lowered because of some of the drivers' poor behavior.

The driver's attitude is terrible. He yelled at passengers who were using their cell phones on the bus, asking "Do you want to get off?" and got mad at boys who wouldn't get on the bus, asking "Where are you going?" He was like a gangster driver. However, he was all lovey-dovey with young female passengers, and I was more shocked than angry. I want to go to Oita again, but I definitely don't want to use Kamenoi Bus again.

Kamenoi is an affordable means of transport in Beppu. You collect a coupon as you board the bus, and make the payment when you board the bus depending on distance. Alternatively u can get a day pass (900 yen) to save the trouble.
The route map with schedule arrival time can be obtained from tourist information counter for free.
If you jus want to go to all the hotspring (a.k.a hell), you can take bus 26 to red onsen. After you are done, you can continue taking the same bus to Kanakawa bus-station (7 mins bus ride or a 20 misn upslope climb). From Kanakawa, you will be able to walk up to Umi jigoku to cover the remaining 5 onsen along your way.
You should be able to catch a bus bck to Beppu JR station at bus station opposite Umi Jigoku.
The arrival timing of busses are very inconsistent. Almost all bus ride were late for 20-30mins from scheduled time. So do take note and factor in the waiting time if yoh choose to use bus as your transport medium in Beppu. Myself, as an example, waited almost 40 minutes to catch a bus from Umi jigoku bck to Beppu station.

As far as I could tell, there are regular bus services and services aimed at tourists. (The tourist busses have faces painted at the front). I waited over 40 minutes for a tourist bus to Beppu ropeway, and tried to buy the advertised one day pass. The driver spoke limited English, but it turns out you can't buy the day pass on the bus. Coming back from the ropeway, a public bus turned up first (still after a long wait) so I took that instead.

We had joined a bus tour organized by this bus company to visit the seven hells in Beppu. It was a rainy day but our guide was manged to keep everything under control while she was always wearing a warm and welcoming smile. She was all soaked after the tour.

I used it from Beppu Station when I went to the hospital with my mother.
When we arrived at the hospital, my mother presented her disability certificate and said that there were two adults, but they charged the normal bus fare for two adults. I asked the driver, "Did you see this?" and showed him my disability certificate, but he muttered about not refunding the money, so I said I would contact the bus company and left the place. After that, I called Kamenoi Bus headquarters, and they said they would check with the driver and hung up, but then they called me back, and when I called back, they said they would refund the money and I should come to the office, which surprised me!
They told me to come and collect it even though it was their mistake.
When there was a similar mistake before, the office lady said they would refund the money to the bankbook, so when I asked them to refund the money to the bankbook, they said, "There is a fee for refunding the money to the bankbook," which left me dumbfounded.
They asked me why I didn't get some kind of certificate from the driver, but I didn't know that such a certificate was necessary, and the driver didn't say anything to me.
In the end, I had to go to a nearby bus office, but the Kamenoi bus driver was terrible.
I think they should re-train him.
His behavior was so terrible that I couldn't believe it.

I am stayng at a hotel near to Beppu Station. Do you advise I stay one night at hotel near Helll of Beppu to avoid huge crowd coming back to Beppu station? What is the last operating time for bus Kamenoi to come back from Hell of Beppu to Beppu Station? Is there any attraction or good restuarant at night of Hell of Beppu?
Written 1 September 2018
Hells of Beppu closes late afternoon, meaning you dont have to worry about last bus as they will close way earlier than that. Hotel in Beppu station is nice as buses start and end there plus the train station is near. If you are referring to Onsen, there are many onsen around beppu that chances are you can find one walking distance from your hotel (if your hotel doesnt have one in the first place).
