It was my first time to experience a steam bath which was truly amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful. Highly Recommend if you’re in Kannawa !

Good value

The staff is very friendly. Room is decent size for 2 people. They have couple outdoor pools on the ground floor and rooftop Dinner and breakfast are good. Their renovation is a bit dated but overall it is a good hotel for that price range.

Lots of Things to See & Buy
Sep. 2016 • Solo
Kannawa Onsen was a big area where there were Onsen, restaurants, souvenir shops and a part of the Jigoku Meguro.

Throughout this area, there were many small indoor Onsen where you may directly walk in. There were also lots of steam (mushi in Japanese) Onsen, what Kannawa was mostly famous for.

I spent two hours walking around, checking souvenirs and taking photos. It was a serene, beautiful place.

Take hot spring calmly
May 2016 • Couples
I went to this area to take bath at a famous hot spring as a day trip. I visited Oniishi-no-yu hot spring house. I took bath at 1500 yen. It was not crowded due to earthquakes in Kumamoto. However I didn't feel any effect from earthquakes in Beppu. Now it is very good chance to take Beppu hot spring calmly.

Great place to stroll at night and take an onsen
Offers very dramatic views of streets full of steam - especially at night - Looks like Hell!

Onsen capital of Japan
May 2011 • Friends
Plenty to do and see in the Kannawa Onsen area of Beppu, with enough onsen to keep one occupied day and night for weeks, as well as the famous jigoku ('hells') which are for looking rather than bathing. The hells are well worth a tour over one or 2 days, with a wide variety of boiling pools of different colours and consitencies.

Despite the high tourist concentration in this part of Beppu (as opposed to the city), there are plenty of small back streets that are home to many small and private places to stay, as well as many restaurants and Japanese inns.

Kannawa Onsen is much quieter overall than the hustle and bustle of Beppu city, and has plenty to offer for a variety of travellers. Try to look beyond the major onsens (like the namesake Kannawa) and find some more quaint representations of Japan.

Definitely recommended as a key area to visit while in Beppu.
