Its worthwhile spending time strolling around this island. Besides the special Devil's washing board effect, there is a shrine on the island.

Best seen at low tide, this beautiful natural phenomenon is amazing to see! I really haven't seen anything like this anywhere else. It is fun to explore and only enhances the stunning views all around Aoshima.

I was in the Air Force, and had a weekend pass. I took the train from Fukuoka, and got off the train at sundown. I had no special plans, and no reservations for hotel or activities. I was depending on the good graces of the local residents to lead me to the right places.
I started to walk along the rows of bars on each side of me. Bars downstairs, bars upstairs. I randomly picked one bar, walked upstairs, and when I walked in, the four customers left! I sat on the stool waiting for the bartender to turn around, so I could ask him to recommend a hotel. He was polishing glasses. When he turned around, very surprised to see a foreigner, pointed a finger to his nose and said: "me no speak English!". To I told him that I could speak a little Japanese. Surprised, he dropped his glass! A dozen new customers came into the bar to see the strange foreigner, and along the ones who had left earlier. And the party was on!

Miazaki is Japan's Florida. 50 years ago, very few foreigners ever went there. So a Caucasian who spoke some Japanese was quite a novelty at the time. And the hospitality was very warm. Threre's a lot more to this story, but space here doesn't allow it. I would say if I had the money, I'd go back there and Fukuoka, in a heartbeat, but never got rich enough to do another visit.

Quite an unique feature. I have never seen this before elsewhere on the planet. It is very difficult to describe. It looks like a wavelike rock structure created by the constant waves around the island and aligned in perfect parallel lines. It is often referred to as being the "Devil's Washboard". It is located around Aoshima Island. Although you can walk on it, for a long way actually, you really have to watch out because the rocks might be very, very slippery.

There are many so called devil washboard around the place but this one is the best. It's close to the city. Sunset is great with the Aoshima Shrine in the picture.

We only saw it from the car as we drove along the coast road, however it was very scenic. It really did look like a corrigated wash board. If we had the time and we were drivimg we would have stopped to explore the rock pools up close. all the volcanic mountains and flora and fauna around miyazaki is paradise.

Onino Sentakuita (The Devil's washboard) is a place you must see. When I first saw them, I though it is men-made. The nature is amazing.
