Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This roadside station is located on Prefectural Route 377, which runs along the Nichinan Coast from Horikiri Pass to Utsumi. This roadside station is also a gathering place for vintage cars and bikers. On the day of the trip, various vintage cars such as Skylines were gathered and heading out for a ride. If you head towards Utsumi on Prefectural Route 377, you can occasionally see the Oni no Sentakuita (Devil's Sentakuboard) on the coast, which is a magnificent sight. If you cross the road from Roadside Station Phoenix, you can see the Oni no Sentakuita (Devil's Sentakuboard) on the coast. The Oni no Sentakuita seen from here is also amazing.

The exposed seabed looks the olden days wooden washing board. We did not walk down to the beach there as you can in other stops. The coast along the Nichinan area is a scenic drive. The stop here has a big park and a big store selling local agricultural produce.

On our way to Kagoshima City we passed by a few places to visit then decided to take a break. Luckily, we found this place- Horikiri Pass Phoenix Road Station ( Michi no Eki Phoenix). The parking area was full but we were able to park soon after arriving.
We had lunch at Horikiri Restaurant. The food was a bit pricy but good. We were seated by the window side. The view was nice and relaxing.
After lunch, we went to their souvenir store to buy some sweets.Took photos of the ocean view and proceeded to our next destination.

I came here for the first time in decades. I've been to many roadside stations in Kyushu, but as a resident of Miyazaki Prefecture, I'm embarrassed to say that there is one roadside station I've visited, Phoenix Roadside Station. It's a representative roadside station in Miyazaki Prefecture, and even though it attracts many tourists from outside the prefecture, the toilets are old and dirty, and the seats are still cold. Recently, even the temporary toilets have hot seats, and the exterior of the building is covered in seaweed? moss? It looks dirty and doesn't look like they're putting much effort into tourism.

This was No. 1 Michi-no-Eli in Kyushu 2020. REALLY? The upstairs restaurant was closed (still COVID) so couldn’t see the view. Bought snacks and a Chicken Sandwich ( not good cold),restrooms, then left.

Soft Serve was interesting flavors: apple mango, ashitaba, and Hyuganatsu but they were made from a strange gelatin-like texture.

This roadside station is along the rugged shoreline highway of Miyazaki. If you move from south to north or the other way round, you have to pass this site. Do stop by for the breathtaking views. From above, you can clearly see the result of who knows how many million years of corrosion by waves and wind. It offers amazing opportunities for photo taking.

Worth stopping by if you are on the way to Sunmesse Nichinan or that direction and if you plan to spend 2-3 days in Miyazaki.

If you will be driving or have friends driving (lucky you!), good spot to make a brief bio/ stretch your legs/ take in the scene break. If you are like me (truly bus11 style i.e. Walk + public transport), plan it in advance! Like most small towns in Japan, relying on public transports especially bus can be confusing and pure pain. Upside is, a tourist one-day bus pass only cost 1000yen and can take you from/ around downtown to the coastline, that is if you don't mind taking up to 2 hours bus rides and be able to work out the bus schedules.

This is a good place to picnic and take a mild hike (up concrete steps, nothing hardcore).

If time is of the essence, then Aoshima island is where you need to go where you can walk along and up close to the "Devil's Washboard".

Other tips on using Miyazaki bus system -
1. The tourist bus pass can be brought at the airport and tourist centre by presenting your passport
2. Alight bus at the back door where you will see a token machine, each passenger (with the bus pass) must take one and show both items to the driver when getting off the bus at the front door
3. At the main station, there are timetables and a table indicating which bus number will stop at which track number and east or west gate
4. You may pay in cash (coins) if you did not purchase a bus pass in advance, the token is punched with a number, match it with the monitor that displays how much your fare is

You have to leave the main road and turn east toward the coast to reach this rest area, but you'll be rewarded with beautiful views south along the Nichinan Coast including a good view of the "Devil's Washboard." There are a variety of flowers planted around the area, a walkway down to the sea, and now they seem to specialize in mangoes. They have several plants growing outside near the ice cream outlet. Inside, they have souvenirs and products from the area. Upstairs is a restaurant.

There is also a trail going up the hillside in back of the building where there used to be a cactus garden. This is a good place to take a break from driving as well as enjoy the overlook of the coast. You drive past Horikiri Pass on the way to the station.

Grab an ice-cream, there is one in ‘Shrimp flavor’.
The shop sells local agricultural products. There is also a lookout of the famous Nichinan coastline across the road. Local tourist buses also stop here.

Everyone makes a stop here, for snacks, ice-cream, food....but most of all for the gorgeous views of the coast.
