Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Aoshima Devil's Washboard is a very unique rock formation by waves. We checked the low tide time so you can have full view of the washboard. If you are in Miyazaki this is the place you must visit n touch the washboard.
There a few restaurants n shops near so you may have some shopping there. We had a nice time in Aoshima.

Saw this is a guidebook and decided we must go. So happy we did. The whole community has a great laid back surfer vibe. The gardens in the town are beautiful. Countless people came up to us to have a quick chat. Wish we had stayed a night there.
The washboard is fantastic. Such a unique and interesting formation that carries on down the coast for miles. This is the easiest spot to stop and have a look at. As others have done, we timed our visit for low tide to get the best effect. Daytrip from Miyazaki-shi. The temple on the island has a very lovely garden area tucked into the centre. Very interesting.
Really enjoyed our day there.

Such a great view from the island.
Before reaching the access, you walk through open store fronts to find wares and food. From the city through the bridge, you have an easy paved walk. Once you cross the bridge, you are welcomed by groomed crunchy sand to the shrine.
For those who may have difficulty walking across, there is an independent motorized shuttle.
Don't forget sun-shade.

The volcanic rock formations are unusual, in a similar vein to the Giants Causeway in Antrim in Ireland. The shrine on the island nothing special. However the wooden train that leaves from Miyazaki is worth booking and taking.

Small island that can be covered within an hour. Here (Mapcode : 843 192 038*58), you also can find the Devil's washboard and Aoshima shrine. You have to pay for parking, per entrance of about 500Yen. This island has quite a number of cats but no worries for those who fear cats, the cats are pretty shy and would not approach you.

I'm 6/3 and about 200 lbs (~90 kilos). Walking across the causeway to this island I was glad for every ounce (or gram). There was a relentless wind of about 60 mph (~100 kph). I was actually worried that some of the smaller folks walking across would get picked up and dropped into the ocean. Once across there was shelter. The devils' washboard formations were fascinating and once you could get into the little forest and to the shrine it got better. Coming back out and circling the island was maybe an hour in total and was an excellent way to spend an hour. Plenty of photo/film opportunities.
Really enjoyed my visit.

A 30 mins train ride from Miyazaki station. Nice view of the beach area. The Famous Devils Washboard and the Aoshima Temple is located on the island. Take a slow walk across the bridge and view the natural rock formations that looks like washboards. Nice spot to take some pictures. There is a Botanical Garden before the entrance of the bridge. Try to visit the Garden on the way if there is time to spare. Its a nice and peaceful garden to relax.

Aoshima is a small island just of the coast but connected to the mainland by a bridge. I took the train to get there which takes about half an hour. From Aoshima station it takes another 5 till 10 minutes to reach the bridge. The island itself is small and almost completely covered with subtropical forest apart from the complete costal area. Here you can walk around the complete island which is a walk of about 1500 meters. It is a great walk. On your way you will pass a Torii gate and the Shrine a little bit further down. The forest itself should not be entered. A remarkable location.

The Aoshima Island is a must see for first time visitors. The small island is surrounded by natural rock formations known as “devil’s washboard”. When you walk across the bridge to the island, you can choose to follow the round the island path on either side. The shrine is on the right. You can finish the circular route in about 15 minutes. Longer if you are inevitably tempted by the photo ops along the way. For self-drive visitors, there is a fee paying parking lot on the main road.

This is a truly beautiful place and the island itself is beautifully shaped. Surrounded by the "devil's washboard 鬼の洗濯板" and it's surely one of the very attractive points of the island. Very convenient to reach here by Railway and the island is about 15 minutes walk from the railway station. Do come to visit the temple if you hope for some luck and wealthiness.

We are arriving in Miyazaki on a cruise ship. Is the port close to the train station? Do you recommend we take the train and then walk around the island or should we take a tour?

We are arriving in Miyazaki on a cruise ship.Would you recommend taking a shore excursion tour to Aoshima Island?
Written 4 February 2019
Absolutely. Great small little island with unique features of nature surrounding it. I was very pleasantly surprised by it last summer when I visited Miyazaki. Do not forget to walk around the whole island. It's a great walk.

I dont think so. Because it is quite small an Island and the temple occupy quite a part of it.Moreover, I bet the Japanese government wants to protect the landscape and peacefulness of this small little Island.

Is it true that Aoshima is one of Japan's 'cat islands' now?
There are many stories in the news about this but none of the reviews on here mention cats at all?
If anyone has been recently I would be interested to know.
Many thanks.

You have the wrong Aoshima Island against the question if the Guardian story is correct. Aoshima Island that you have picked of is the one in Miyazaki prefecture. Been there, it has a shrine and a nice walk but not a lot of cats being a cat lover I would have noted. The Guardian puts the cat island of Aoshima in Ehime prefecture. Put Aoshima Ehime in Google, tap on map then zoom out and the island is in the sea of Japan. Put Miyazaki Aoshima into google maps and pull out and that's the one you have.
Question is does Tripadvisor have anything on the cat island ?. hmmm
