This garden looked like it has passed its hay day. The landscaping is outdated and not much care is given. Best spot is to go to the macha tea house and enjoy the panoramic view.
Entrance fee 400 Yen is overpriced. Saving grace is carpark is free and toilet is spotless.
If you need to kill some time, you can definitely drop by but do lower your expectations if you have seen gorgeous Japanese garden like those in Kyoto and Kanazawa.

Just loved visiting this garden. It's not large so it doesn't take long to wander around and there are a couple of places where you can eat if needed. Beware the parking! My satnav stopped short of the dedicated parking area for the garden. There are two other parking spots, one possibly for the adjacent apartments and the other for a shop. Don't park in those but continue down the street to the bigger parking for the garden.

A lovely and elegant garden that has a long history behind it. Definitely recommended if you are a fan of Japanese gardens. I would have preferred to see the garden during spring time and experience Hanami, but we happened to come during January, which is also fine (has a different feel to it).

These gardens are only a quick train ride and a 10 minute walk from the station and are really a must. I love my Japanese gardens and while these are compact they are well worth a visit. Try getting early or later in the day to avoid the crowds.

One of the places you must visit when you are in Kumamoto.
Beautiful, large and serene park. Also quite varied. Has a shrine, some torii gates, quite a bit of greenery.
Easily accessible by city tram

We did the castle in the morning and had late lunch in the Sakura rest and shopping area. We then went by tram to the Suizenji Jojuen Garden in the late afternoon. The lighting for pictures was quite nice at this time of day but we missed going to the shops in the property since they were closed by the time we got to them. I recommend this garden for any photography buff or anyone interested in landscape, bonsai or getting the Zen feeling in a beautiful garden. The water is veery clear and you can clearly see the koi and bottom of the pond. The natural spring drinking water area near the temple is supposedly good for your health according to the sign (written in Japanese) so we drank up due to the hot day. Again, there are those who say it wasn't much but I really don't get what they are expecting to see when they post these negative comments. This place is exactly what it says it is, no pretentions or commercialization. It is not the place for you if you are in a rush to be thrilled by blockbuster stimulation but #1 for beautiful photos of Japanese garden, meditation and relaxation. We had planned to go back to the station area for dinner but came upon a great hole in the wall yakitori restaurant that opened at 6pm right when we were about to get to the tram, I posted a picture of it as everything is in Japanese so not sure about full name of place. We tried horse meat yakitori, quite tasty, like kalbi in taste; try it.

Even the children ( aged from 3-9 ) enjoyed the gardens on a glorious sunny morning. Easy to walk round with an excellent variety of trees, shrubs and flowers all beautifully tended, the star attraction is the lake with its carp and ducks. The Wedding Hall is in active use-you may be fortunate to witness a kimono clad bride.

Another Japanese garden developed around a famous tea garden. Take the blue line tram getting off at number 18 (Suizenji Park), follow the road back about 50 metres in the direction the tram came from and bear right for about 150 metre and then entre a small shopping area which leads directly to the gardens. Entry Fee Yen 400. Large pond to walk around with Koi Carp and Trout. The garden is well maintained and plenty to sit and admire. A miniature Mt Fuji is a central feature of the gardens together with its large pond / small lake.

The landscape was well maintained, with pine trees and hills. The fall leaves were very pretty and we even chanced upon a bride in a kimono posing for a wedding photo. There is a shrine inside the park, and visitors may also drink the "longevity water" from a well inside the shrine. There are pigeons and koi, and feed can be bought at one of the many stalls selling it. The pigeons are used to people feeding them, and can be coaxed onto your arm or lap to get at the food, which we thought highly interesting. Well worth going, and was extremely relaxing and beautiful.
