Visiting Mt Aso
Nov. 2019 • Couples
As it was at level 2 eruption warning, we could not get to the super ring or crater view. For safety sake, we watched Mt Aso from the observatory area. Not too bad as the distance kept us away from the smoke and allowed us to take pictures of the view. Remember to check the official site on latest status updates of the crater.

Crater closed
Oct. 2019
We had hoped to visit the crater of Mount Aso but unfortunately due to recent volcanic activity it was closed, in the distance we could see a thick plume of smoke rising from the latest eruption. The visitor centre wasn't the most interesting but there were some good views of the surrounding countryside.

Hakata Beppu Aso Boy to Aso Station
Nov. 2019 • Friends
Spent almost 8 hours on the train to ASOSAN today . Not many tourists comparing to the time I came in February (Chinese New Year). The Bus from Aso Station took us to ASOSAN NISHI Station ( return ticket costed ¥1,300) . The bus was called “Sanko Bus” (35 minutes per ride) .

Great view
Sep. 2019 • Friends
When in Kumamoto, it is a must to visit Mt Aso, made up of the peaks of 5 volcanoes. Hence we visit Mt Aso this morning by taking a bus to the Mt Aso station since the train service has stopped. We then take another bus to the volcano museum. Spend 1 hour hiking up Mt Kishimadake and the rest of the time soaking up the beauty of the place. It is very overcast in the morning but towards noon the sky clears up and it is beautiful. Definitely worth the trip!

Nice place to see active volcano
Jun. 2019 • Family
There was a level 2 eruption when we went and so we cannot get close to the crater, but nevertheless we still enjoyed the trip to mount Aso. Clean and nice place and my kid enjoy being there away from the tall buildings in the city centre. Getting away from the busy city centre is a great way to relax.

Once in a lifetime
Aug. 2019 • Couples
Our first active volcano sighting. Great walk around the prescribed trek. Rental car was meant for these sort of drives that take you to the areas that are less visited.

Mind numbing
Dec. 2018
We hired a taxi from Kumamoto town which took us to the volcano through the mountainous countryside which had been devasted by the earthquake three years earlier and could scarcely imagine the terror that the people living there must have felt. But even more impressive was the gigantic effort being put into repairing the mountains themselves. Arriving at the Aso volcano itself we were first struck by the sulphurous smell and the white smoke emerging from the top. There is a good and informative visitor centre near the foot of the volcano and, a little further on a restaurant area with good parking and excellent views of the volcano. Don't miss the nearby small and friendly town of Aso itself, with one of Japan's most revered shrines now under repair from the earthquake damage.

Thrilling Way to See the Earth's Power
Apr. 2019 • Solo
As someone who studied geology and has a keen interest in dramatic landscapes, visiting an active volcano has been high on my must-do list. I was fortunate in early April to visit and actually see the Mount Aso Crater.

I say fortunate because research will tell you that public access to the crater can be closed-off at any time if dangerous conditions are forecasted. In fact, the area 1km around the crater is currently closed, and has been closed since April 14 at 2:30pm ... I visited on April 14 and left at 1:15 pm, so that's how fortunate I was. There are a number of websites that give information about crater access but be careful to ensure the information provided is current.

A key recommendation to visit the crater is to rent a car either in the town of Aso or city of Kumamoto. Relying on public bus transportation restricts you to how much time you can spend at the crater. If all you want to do is view the crater, that's fine. But if you want to walk to the crater area from the Volcano Museum, hike around the crater (fantastic volcanic scenery) or spend time in the Volcano Museum, then you need the flexibility of your own transport. Driving in rural Japan is easy and enjoyable and provides for more sightseeing, and rentals are not too expensive for a compact car, even if they are one-way. Note that depending on your home country, you may need an International Driving Permit, as well as your Driver's Licence.

Also, be sure to check the weather and dress warmly. Visiting the crater means you're high up the mountain ... it can be (I assume is usually) very windy and the weather is highly changeable.

Timing is crucial
Mar. 2019
One of the uniqueness of Mt Aso is the Nakadake crater. However you should check the local Aso website or FB to see if the crater is opened to public as it is a active volcano and local authorities monitor its activities very closely and will close off to public visit if reaching alert level 2 or above. The rope way is still inoperative due to the earthquake in 2016 but there are buses to the crater.
