Take the road a few kilometres from the ferry port up to the visitor centre and walk the nicely paved walkways for a view of the volcano from the closest point allowed. Good vistas in all directions. The visitor centre has a large map on the floor to help understand the area. It is impressive to see the various massive... More

This is a great alternative to Fuji, in a warmer part of the country with more of a chance of seeing it. Our hotel was right opposite but we also went on a day trip to visit. We walked quite a distance and then got a tram but unless your hotel is nearby it is probably better to get a... More

Location is pretty close to city. it takes 15 mins ferry/ship from 水族館口站 nearby. They provide the ferry service every 15mins. sakurajima have foot hotspring and it takes 15mins from port to hotspring area.

Very hard to get around unless you take a tour (you are 'encouraged' to do so) or unless you have a car..Local buses are from different companies (so hard to take a day pass). The tour company going to a summit close to the ferry terminal has buses every hour, so you can;'t really wait for the next bus. It... More

I read the reviews and people say the best place to view is on the ferry. I don't agree. So glad I came over then I was going to book a two hour trip for ¥1800 but my time was limited so ended up on a local bus for ¥500. Was very good got some fine photos. Any closer and... More

With clear blue skies today we enjoyed the view of the volcano from several vantage points including Dolphin Wharf, the ferry, Dinosaur Park and lookout on Sakurajima.

The beautiful scenery with very quiet environment. You will enjoy the ferry and bus ride when the weather is nice.

Sakurajima is the Vesuvio of Japan, or so people say. Except this one regularly spits out ash as anyone who lives in Kagoshima can testify to. You can come here by ferry, which doesn't take long at all, and take a tour of the area by bus (although it's a lot more enjoyable if you have your own transportation). I... More

The island us accessible by the ferry which comes every 15 mins so it's pretty easy to get to. If you are going better take the island view bus pass it's very convenient. I visited it was winter and was raining that day so it wasn't the best day but was still fun.

It was not possible to see this volcano close enough. There were a bus tour but it was a disappointment even though they said that this is one of the mostly visited palces in Japan. If you belive what japanese say, every place there is most visited.
