Located at Kada Bay, about 11 km NW of Wakayama. Awashima Shrine is dedicated to the goddess for women, who is believed to ensure easy childbirth. The shrine is decorated with dolls and figurines from all over Japan. There is the Nina Nagashi ritual held on 3 March, where worshippers float commemorative paper dolls down to the sea, along with... More

Our friends took us to this quite small shrine and we were immediately fascinated by all the small statues that people had left there as gifts or something (was a bit confused as to the reasoning). The dolls are just beautiful and there are so many of them !!! My grandchildren were also amazed at the areas where specific animal... More

Stride up to the shrine entrance, throw a 5 yen coin in a box, then clap, close your eyes and make a wish. Ring the bell if you want. And then as you open your eyes and walk away, you start to feel them....1000s of tiny eyes staring! Doll eyes, tanuki statuette eyes, carved bear eyes, maneki neko (Japanese waving... More

An enchanted place... filled with hundreds of dolls and figurines of cats, hedgehogs, foxes, frogs and so on. It's not big but walking around takes some time, as there are so many things to see. It is possible to buy an oracle there too. Close to the shrine is a beautiful beach, great for a lazy stroll.

. . . I didn't know where it was. It is a shrine known for the many beautiful dolls, that is often shown on Japan travel shows. I was lucky to visit in March when the annual doll festival is held, where the dolls are placed on little boats and float (actually are towed out) to sea. The dolls themselves... More

This shrine is somewhat out of the way. You need to take a 25min train ride from Wakayama-shi Station to Kada Station (last on the line). It's an oceanside town, and also where you would take the ferry to Tomogashima Island. The location is really nice as it's along the ocean, but windy, so I'd recommend dressing warmly in the...
