Fairly extensive complex, but gives a real feel for traditional semi-residential Japanese arcitecture. Left wondering how we could incorporate the simplicity and tranquility of the designs into our lives.

The Great Buddha Hall in Todai-ji Temple, which accommodates the awe-inspiring largest bronze Buddha statue in the world, is a must see in Nara!! It's incredible that the original hall was 50% bigger than the current hall made in 17th century!! However, before seeing the Great Budda Statue, don't forget to go through the Nandaimon(South Great Gate) of the Temple... More

Going inside you'll find the majestic temple - and although only 2/3 the size of the original temple from 10th century - still very impressive. It's one of the few budhist temples... More

Maybe too many tourists and sometimes... More

We took a JR train from Osaka to Nara for a day trip to this area, which is unarguably one of our best days in Japan. The walking tour recommended by lonely planet worked out well (see page 380 if you have access to one) Approximately 1200 calm and relaxed deer walk through the park. The building protecting the great... More

Inside Todaiji is one of the worlds largest Buddha statues. This one called Vairocana Buddha is 15m high, your ticket to the temple gives some astounding statistics about the statue. It is cast in bronze and plated in gold. It was consecrated in 752. The building around it has burnt down a bouple of times. The building is 33% smaller... More
