Admission is free. The facility was built based on the townhouses that were scattered around Naramachi around the time of the Meiji era. It is characterized by its narrow frontage and long depth, which is also expressed as an eel's bed.

Nara is a great place to explore from Osaka with a easy JR ride from Namba station ..
Lots of temples and the famous indoor buddha and dear park ..
Been twice and enjoyed both times very much

My wife and I visited old Nara, the ancient capital of Japan, in October 2013 on a day trip from Kyoto. We travelled by Japan Rail local train from Kyoto station (a trip of only around 45 minutes), which was free as we had JR Rail Passes. This is a quaint area of heritage timber houses and shops, with several interesting examples of ancient temples. I understand that there are a number of buildings where an entry fee is charged, but we found plenty to see and do without needing to pay entry fees. The town also features an attractive park in which at least two species of deer are free to roam. Street vendors sell small bags of deer food should you wish to feed the bambies. While we walked (and shopped) for several hours, there were still plenty of attractions which did not get time to see. Definitely a must-see if you are in the Kyoto/Osaka area.

with our original plan, just saw the sign while walking sanjodori st, checked on the map, only a short detour, so paid a visit, surprise, only walked about 5 min, felt back into past. most of visitors make a day trip from kyoto or osaka to nara, but we will make sure have a couple of days to stay here next time. just enjoyed this town. there is some buses, and 2 loop bus lines to get around, but we done whole day on foot, very easy to navi, we know there are lots of visitor in this small town but you only find tranquility here.

This house used to be a merchant house and has been conserved in a pristine condition. Admission is free and you can take your time to look around the traditional layout with authentic furnishings. There is even a beautiful zen garden at the back of the house with a small water feature.This site is also part of frequent Japanese high school field trips as it encapsulates a vital part of history. Very much worth the visit!

This is a beautiful city an hour away from Kyoto by train. It is naturistic, full of temples and full of bambis (deers). Definately worth a visit if you are in this side of the country.

This was a bit difficult to find but if you are seeing Gangoji Temple, you are very close. The neighborhood has narrow, winding streets and old, traditional houses and shops. People were very friendly and helpful in our search. Admission is free. Very enlightening. It is also near the sake tasting room.

We chanced upon this while walking around Naramachi and end up spending about 45 mins going through each corner of the Machiya. The staff-in-attendance was very helpful and explains a lot of the details of the house to us, and demonstrating the use of some of the kitchen utensils. There are also Kimono for ladies and little girls to put on with the help of the attendance, an interesting house to visit!
