We nearly missed this, not realising it was a separate place to the main Toshogu shrine. It is so worth seeing - the buildings are so intricate and full of carvings. It was much quieter than Toshogu and it was much easier to enjoy the experience.

We visited this shrine and bought the combined ticket that included access to the area under complete reconstruction closer to Rinnoji (the Sanbutsu-do Temple). It was well worth the 900 yen. The gardens of Taiyuinbyo are absolutely stunning and peaceful. The shrine itself is quite dramatic. It was worth it to get away from the worst of the crowds.
We also found the Sanbutsudo-in construction site absolutely fascinating. We were able to see the three buddha statues up close in a way you never get to see. Also, climbing the 7 stories up to the top to witness to monumental task of renovating the enormous temple structure was fascinating! Well worth it!
We then wandered across the street to the beautiful garden opposite the entrance to the Sanbutsudo-in.

Also, climbing the 7 stories up to the top to witness to monumental task of renovating the enormous temple structure was fascinating! Well worth it!

This is a long way in from the main gates of the shrine complex (so not such a concentration of visitors) but worth the walk. You also have to climb a lot of steps to get up to the mausoleum and so you feel like you are up among the trees. The statues, details in the building and the beautiful stone lanterns are all impressive. We visited several shrines in Japan but I remember this one more than the others.

This is another beautiful shrine and very peaceful, as it is given a miss by many tourists. We were the only folks there on an early morning. Not as flashy and ornate as Toshu-go but worth a visit nevertheless, as it is in the same area and within walking distance. Entrance to the tomb was closed on the day of our visit (i am not sure if they open it to tourists). They were just starting renovations when we visited so please check on when these are expected to be completed.

Magnificent. A must see in Nikko. Located away from the central Tosho-gu shrine, it is much quieter and not commercialized. I would recommend arriving early in the morning when it is not crowded, so you could fully enjoy the shrine and gorgeous surroundings. There is a bus departing from Nikko Train Station, which will take you directly to the Shrine (bus stop # 58). You can buy day-tickets for the bus at Nikko Train Station, be ready to pay cash, as credit cards are not accepted.

This shrine has a lot of stairs, so keep that in mind if you plan on visiting. The main gate is currently being renovated, but there are other buildings that were still nice to see. Like most other shrines, you can't take any pictures when you go inside the building.

As others have said, this shrine is located some distance away from the others, and is the last stop on the itinerary. Perhaps this is what makes a visit here so enjoyable. There were very few visitors by late afternoon, and the mist in the trees and quietness made this a high point of our Nikko visit.
I'd recommend, even if late in the day and you're feeling tired from the crowds and hiking, do make it to visit this unique site.

The 'Taiyuin Temple' or Mausoleum was just beautiful. Accessed through a walk and climb up some steep stone steps in amongst the forest I found this place to be quieter and more spiritual than the other over-crowded shrines and temples within the Nikko complex. You pass through several gates, including a beautiful Chinese Gate, until you reach the Main Hall and Prayer Hall. Intricately carved and ornately decorated with gold leaf it is a stunning structure set in a naturally beautiful location. There are numerous stone lanterns donated by daimyo feudal lords in a scenic spot.
At the back of the Main Hall you will find the Kokamon Gate, constructed in the Dragon Shrine style, behind which the interred remains of Lemitsu lay. Despite its beauty and my recommendation to visit it the location and the steep steps that access this temple mean that it is not, in my opinion, suitable for very small children, the elderly or those with medical or mobility conditions.

Nikko having both Buddhist and Shinto temples makes it a must do if staying in Tokyo. 2h train for this world heritage site. Please don’t hesitate, worth every second

This was lit up at night so the atmosphere was energetic yet mysterious. Even my young son could feel something magical about it then after enjoy the free refreshments served at the entrance in a festival atmosphere. It was good comparing it to Toshogu.
