This garden is really marvellous and I suppose it must be more in Spring or Autumn. It is a huge and salvage garden With a lot of sort of trees and flowers. I have spent 90 minutes to make the tour. You Can Go to the river and see the best View of the abyss. If I Come back in Japan in Autumn or Spring it Will be my first préoccupation.
Now why my remark about the taxation of tourist. It is my only bad experience in 4 weeks in Japan. It is the first Time they propose to me a poor Map ( Green - Black) With the name in English but With extra charge of 50 yens. It is not a lot but I have the Feeling That in Nikko .. They don t try to be attractive to foreign Tourist. In the temple You have no explanation in English. In the Tourist information center You Cann t buy a bus ticket for 1 day ( only 2 Days for 3.000 yens). As You Will spent one day in the major temple ... What Can You do With a 2 Days tickets ( stay 3 days in Nikko is too long for a foreign Tourist).
Well I suppose they don t want foreign tourists because they have enough ? Well Go to Kanazawa ( the Tourist pay Half the price !) and There is Many place to see.
Well I do this long remark ... Hoping That a japanese from Nikko read It and try to soften the actual position.

You can visit it in less than 1 hour. Beautiful place. In the back of the garden there is a river with beautiful white-waters.

We liked this place. It has nice views of the rushing gorge, really pretty hogs and lake. This is more of a 90min wall through a forest than a garden. This was the third best place to view autumn foliage in Nikko. It was nice because my daughter could run around as there was no one else at the park. We liked it a lot plus was nice as we didn’t have time to make it to lake. 1st best place to view autumnfoliage is the gardens below the shoyog-en garden then imperial villa then this place. You can view all three in one day and have a mid-day lunch break at the nearby pizza linne.

I am sure in autumn this would be a much more picturesque garden but at this time (2nd Aug 2016) the garden has little to see other than trees & shrubs (not in flower). Paths are overgrown & the while garden can easily be explored in an hour.
Benches & picnic tables are sporadically found.
Entrance fee:adults 400 yen. Children under 16y 130 yen
Map available in English for a 50yen charge (not worth it as all plants are marked up with binomial name in the park anyway - see photos). Stone markers make it easy to navigate from the Japanese map.
I wouldn't travel to see this but on a hot say it provides a shady walk.

Koishikawa Botanical Garden is famous as a botanical garden at the University of Tokyo, and this is its branch.
Open to the public from April to November.
I went on a Saturday afternoon because it seemed like a place where you could enjoy the autumn leaves at a leisurely pace in Nikko.
The garden is large, so it didn't feel crowded, but there were more people than I expected, probably due to the NHK morning drama. There weren't as many autumn leaves as I had hoped, but the Enkianthus campanulatus stood out.
There is also the waterside inside the garden, and the Kanman-ga-fuchi Observation Area outside, where you can stroll around as if you were in a woodland.
There is a fee to enter, so I don't recommend it unless you love plants and want to stroll around.
Open to the public from April to November.
