- kim buay pSingapore, Singapore13,010 contributionsGood base to stay to do the numerous hikesWe stayed at Okunikko Guesthouse Jun at Lake Chuzenji to hike the various trails at Okunikko. This is a good base to stay as there are many restaurants and shops at Lake Chuzenji. We did not take the ferry ride as it consists of a round trip. I read that previously one can take the one way ride on the ferry to Ryuzu Falls. In the early morning, we walked to the Lake from our guesthouse. At night, I could see the numerous stars clearly in the sky. The shops here closed mainly around 5 pm but fortunately we could eat dinner at the blue Friendly restaurant which was the only one available at about 6.30 pm.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 24 October 2023
- FoodTraveler_theworldBangkok, Thailand3,887 contributionsWonderful lake to visit in Autumn between late October to first week of November. One of popular tourist spot you can mark for your visit around Nikko area, 3 hours drive from Tokyo. With the curve and small road, it is required skillful driver. Visit here around 3rd-4th week of October- 1st week of November should be good to see autumn leaves. I found the place was quite, calm and good for walking /wandering around the lake.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,516 contributionsSunny But ColdWe strolled along the lake after our visit to Kegon Falls. Fall colors were visible and the day was clear allowing some nice photos of the lake and the G7 Nikko sign. However every now and then a cold wind kicked up and chilled us. It got much windier once we walked out onto one of the piers jutting into the lake. Most of the lake activities were closed except for the cruise. We walked by lots of the swan shaped paddle boats pulled up along the shoreline. Overall not much to do but worth a short stop for the views in the fall.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 November 2023
- Kim SToronto, Canada168 contributionsNice lake, but if you have time, consider heading up to Lake Yunoko! It's generally a pretty lake and we took a cruise in the late afternoon in November, because it was included in our Nikko "all area" pass. It's nice, but if you have to choose between this and Lake Yunoko (which is farther up near Yumoto Onsen), we'd suggest taking the time to go to Lake Yunoko. Also, perhaps because of the time of year/day (a Wednesday, in November, late afternoon) there were very limited dining options that were actually open.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 December 2023
- ZimminaroundtheworldOkinawa Prefecture, Japan1,970 contributionsBeautiful Views, Run Down During Winter SeasonI visited Lake Chuzenj in March and although beautiful there was not a lot going on. The town looked a bit rundown. But the lake itself is beautiful with great views of the mountains. I'd love to come back in the late spring to see what the atmosphere is like.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 April 2024
- Mark L1 contributionChujenzi - worth only one night, better to stay in NikkoAs others have noted, this area has very few open restaurants or shops. After 5 pm there are only 3 restaurants where you can eat: two by reservation and one by waiting in line 15 minutes before it opens at 6 pm. Many places are shuttered permanently. There is a good bike rental shop that helps you to spend a day riding in the area. Not worth spending more than two days and one night there.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024

We just walked around the lake near to the bus station. Also viewed from near the campsite side lake and it was different look and our friend said that the area was banned for swimming because of sudden deep drop down of the lake bottom. He said the lake depth was more than 150 meters!
Because of Covid19 closure time, no one was out on the lake by boats etc, it was calm and quiet place.

A very beautiful lake. We stayed at the by the lake for a night and it was really peaceful. Although there’s nothing much to shop, there are a lot of waterfalls nearby lake Chuzenji. It is worth it to stay a night here and visit all the waterfalls around the area.

The day after it snowed, I visited Ryuzu Falls and then walked to Lake Chuzenji. It was a sparkling sight. During the winter, the sightseeing boats were closed and the lake was quiet. I would like to return in season and take a tour of the ports on the lake on a sightseeing boat.

Peaceful and picturesque, Lake Chuzenji in Nikko in autumn offers a dazzling palette of colors. The shimmering reflections of autumn leaves in the calm water of the lake create a magical atmosphere. My fall walk around the lake was a peaceful experience, with the surrounding mountains adding a dimension of unparalleled natural beauty

With Mt. Nantai in the background, the place had a certain divinity to it. Despite being at such a high altitude, the lake is quite large. It was formed by an eruption, and apparently there were no fish in it in the past. After the Meiji period, trout, char and other fish were released into the lake by humans. We took a Lake Chuzenji sightseeing boat around the lake, and we were able to hear various explanations, and the weather was good, so it was very enjoyable.
It was a place that somehow calmed the soul.

This lake is awesome in the correct meaning of the word. Large mountains surround it and it gives a calming feel. This looks like it is an area for walking and the vista are stunning. Worth stopping off for a ten minute stroll if you are passing and to be fair this is probably why you are in the area.

We came in August, and had the feeling of being in a ghost town. Abandoned piers, pedal boats filled with cobwebs, rental company signs for these last worm-eaten ones.
Ideal for the Addams family, for the others, we remain cautious…

Is there a hot spring in this area that has a private room rental for day trippers?
Written 18 September 2019
Hi, I stayed at Hatago Nagomi which there’s no private onsen(hot spring) in room but public (for hotel guests) both indoor and outdoor.
It’s small & cozy hotel with very nice service & superb location right in front of the lake.

Is it easy to travel to lake Chūzenji from Nikko station? Also would it be safe as I’m travelling alone? I’ll be visiting this attraction after golden week in early May so would this place be very quiet? And is there a last bus I need to take note of as I need to return back to Tokyo
Written 3 September 2018
There are two train stations in Nikki, JR Nikki and Tobu Nikki. These two stations are very close, just 2 minutes walking. You can buy travel bus tickets from both stations. The bus will stop at both stations. Don’t worry. Just ask the guy in the ticket office. He/she will tell you everything. Study the bus ticket closely. There are numbers representing bus stops. Even if you don’t know Japanese, you can still check the bus number of the next stop. You can also find the bus schedule at the bus stop back to Nikki. The bus travel time from Nikko to Chuzenji Lake is around 45 minutes, very very punctual. From Chuzenji Lake to Nikki, another 45 minutes. As I remember, there is a train from Tobu Nikki station to Shinjuku of Tokyo every 30 minutes.

Parks are free but you will likely want to buy a multi day bus pass.

Hi SY, where did you enjoy the hot spring (onsen) around Chuzenji? Thanks.
Written 13 November 2016
There are many onsens nearby, you can find one for example at the end of a bus line. Sorry i dont remember which i visited couple of month ago but they can help at the bus station at Nikko. I recommend search for the one that fits best to your taste and budget. Dont miss the boat trip on the lake, well worth!
