I wanted to see Japan in Autumn. The Senjogahara Plateau gave me exactly what I came for. Despite arriving about two weeks early to see the fall colors, I really enjoyed the scenery during the early stages fall.
Hiking the various trails was very nice. Signage, though mostly in Japanese, was very helpful in helping me find my way around the various natural attractions around Nikko.
Note that a planned or expected short hike can turn very lengthy based on the direction one takes on the trails. Consider this when planning your itinerary for Nikko. Bring snacks and water as well. Getting lost on the trails, as they are quite scenic, can actually be a wonderful thing if sufficiently prepared.
Also, heed the wildlife warnings posted along the trails. I spotted a bear during my walk.
I really enjoyed my hike around Senjogahara and would highly recommend it.

This walk was a highlight of our trip to Japan. The chance to walk through a landscape completely unlike anything we have in Australia was one we were determined not to pass up, and the pay-off was definitely worth the effort.
We took the commuter bus from Nikko up into the mountains to Lake Yunoko, a trip that took about an hour. Though it was solidly spring in Nikko, it felt months behind up in the mountains with bare deciduous trees, brown grass and cherry blossoms. We took the easy walking trail around the far side of Lake Yunoko, enjoying the evergreens and stopping to photograph the views along the way. Whichever way you take around the lake, you end up at spectacular Yutaki Falls. The path down to the base of the falls is very steep, but broken up into steps, so it's fine as long as you don't rush. Aside from the viewing platform at the base of the falls, there are toilets, picnic benches, and a shop that sells food and drinks. Just behind the shop is the entry to the nature reserve, fenced off to keep out the ravenous deer. Step inside and you're on the Senjogahara trail.
We took approximately two and a half hours to walk the trail through the reserve from Yutaki Falls to Ryuzu Falls. The terrain varied quite a lot as the trail followed the river through forest in a narrow valley, then led out into more open terrain over low hills, and then out to flat marshland, before entering forest again for the final stretch. A lot of the trail was boardwalk, which was mostly in good repair, and since everything was well signposted there was never a risk of taking a wrong turn and getting lost. There were rest stops and viewing platforms along the way.
The trail was busy, as the area is popular with birdwatchers, fly fishermen, photographers, youth groups, family groups and random tourists, but we never felt crowded and everyone was very friendly. The views were lovely, though still very wintry, and the birdsong never stopped. I saw the biggest snake I've ever seen in the wild just near Ryuzu Falls! For me that's not a bad thing, okay? :)
Ryuzu Falls is on the shores of Lake Chuzenji and very pretty in a completely different style to Yutaki Falls. In addition to toilets, it has eateries and shops, but we didn't try any of them as we wanted to be sure we caught our bus at the nearby stop. By 1500 hours the bus was already busy enough that people had to stand, so you may wish to keep that in mind when planning a trip.
Buy a picnic, pack a camera, and spend a day out walking at Senjogahara Marsh - it's a great contrast to the urban attractions of Nikko and we would be keen to explore other trails in the area if we were lucky enough to return.

I got off at bus stop no. 44 - Yutaki Iriguchi and hiked all the way down to Ryuzu Waterfall where I took the bus again at bus stop no. 37. The entire hike took 2.5 hrs and it an easy one. The marshland had well-maintained broadwalks and the forest had obvious trails. Very serene hike through the forest, marshland and along the river stream. Just take it slowly and don’t rush through it like other hikers. I sugguest you could hike vice versa as I had the morning sun facing me.

I went here on a sunny day with not many people around and loved the atmosphere and nature. Quite a long and relaxing walk.

My favourite part of Okunikko: Senjogahara Marsh land Hike. :)
Difficulty level: 5/10. If you're doing the trail from Ryuzu, it's slightly more difficult due to the steep ascent and many steps up towards the end to Yumoto Onsen. I did it from Yumoto and it was a lot easier.
Length: slightly long and therefore tiring. It took me 3 hours to finish the trail. But along the way it was peaceful and quiet, although very cold. Just be properly attired with good boots if you're hiking in winter. It can get slippery due to the snow. It can also get windy.
Bless the Japanese for building the elevated platforms. It makes walking easy and enjoyable. I really liked this hike and the scenic views.
Please leave the place peaceful and litter free!!! :)

At an altitude of 1,400 m above sea level, Senjogahara covers the plateau between Chuzenjiko and Yumoto Onsen. It is particularly beautiful during the autumn leaf season in October when the marshland's grasses turn into a reddish yellow and the larch trees into a shiny gold.
There are a few restaurants at the entrance before the walking trail starts so take the opportunity to charge up before starting your hike.

We took the public bus from the train station and up to Yutak and hiked along the tracks down to the marshland and down to the waterfalls. The tracks along the forest were cared and well-maintained. The scenery was wonderful and hiking trip enjoyable. However, hikers should check the bus time table in respect of various bus stops for planning the trip ahead.

If you enjoy nature, it’s a must do if you can afford the time. We caught a bus 🚌 to stop 44 (yutaki-iriguchi) on the Yumoto Onsen route and made our way south. We started at yukaki falls, which was breathtaking. There is a wooden board that leads you to senjogahara so it would be a waste to see one without the other as they are close by. We had a perfect day, not too hot. Also walking through the forest canopy is cooler, and very pleasant. Lovely little things to appreciate and the landscape changes throughout the walk. Even saw some people fly fishing. Sometimes the wooden plank stops and starts but for the most part it is well maintained. We spent 4 hours walking as we went all the way to Ryuzu falls and had an ice cream. Great way to spend the day enjoying nature.

It's also known as the Senjogahara Marshland which I think is a better description. We did a walk here in mid April and there was still a little snow around and of course it was too early to see any spring growth. However we did a nice 2 1/2 hour walk. There's no shops or toilets along the way. We caught the local bus to and from here. I would imagine at other times of the year there would be a lot more birdlife. Still it was worthwhile.

I have checked wheather and snow situation of 戦場ヶ原 and 日光area.
It is still cold there but snow is little there so you need winter
wears and shoes even in beginning of March.

Can I take a day trip from Tokyo city to Nikko and do this Senjogahara Field trek, and still get back to Tokyo city at night?

It takes about 3 hours from Tokyo to Nikko Station and 2 hours from Nikko Station to Senjogahara. It is possible to have a day trip if you leave Tokyo early morning. However, I recommend you should stay for one night. Yumoto area is near from Senjogahara and is famous for hot spring. There are hotels along a lake with beautiful landscape.You can buy 2 day pass for bus at Nikko Station.

最高気温 15～17℃ 最低気温 8～10℃ です。
この気温は、東京都心の 11月中旬 の気温とほぼ同じです。
気象庁のホームページをご覧になり、ご自身がお住まいの地域と比較されると解りやすいかと思います。
