The UNESCO designated temples in Nikko brings visitors like myself to a period where serenity is considered a virtue, and being away from the connected world like a blessing. The combination of tall pine trees and stone carved steps gives visitors searching for a historically cultural experience in Japan something to look forward to. A word of caution: There are... More

Spending the day wandering the temples and shrines of Nikko is an amazing experience. Of course, Tosho-gu is not to be missed in any visit to Nikko.

The tall cedar trees gave this shrine a feeling of serenity like you've entered an area of sacred ground. We really enjoyed Nikko and Toshugu shrine.

Gorgeous and golden. It is a little piece of legendary paradise! No pictures inside, you really have to soak it all in.

We visited Nikko Tosho-gu during the cold month of January. Due to the out of season period the temple was not crowded and we didn't had to wait in line for anything. The area is quite big with many interested things to see. I highly recommend to see it during spring or summer time. To visit the inside of the... More

An excellent day trip out of Tokyo at the end of our Japanese holiday. Extremely crowded on the day we were there, probably the most crowded site we visited while in Japan! Beautiful setting, stunning architecture. The whole area has so many sites to visit, and quite easy to walk around. Well worth a visit!

Nikko itself is a perfect day trip from Tokyo, if you see one thing go here. Amazing temple complex with access up to Ieyasu Tokugawa's grave. After viewing this head through the woods and view the complex for his grandson. Next head back into town and view the sacred bridge.

Nikkō Tōshō-gū 日光東照宮 was magnificent in many ways. Tōshō-gū was dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu who started 250 year’s Tokugawa shogunate. It was built in 1617 by his son Hidetada and expanded by grandson Iemitsu. Ieyasu is enshrined and entombed in Tōshō-gū. It listed as UNESCO World Heritage site. The lavishly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen buildings.... More

If you go to Nikko then this is an obvious attraction you will visit. However after visiting multiple cities and attractions across Japan this was not a must do item overall. We enjoyed Nikko because it was the first thing we did outside of Tokyo. It is free to get there if you have a Japan rail pass and the... More
