I went with my husband for the Kanamara Matsuri festival. I teach religious studies so I attended for educational purposes. It is packed with tourists - not good ones, the ones that make you cringe. The majority of non-Japanese visitors treated the entire thing like a massive joke - I am all for having fun but don't be disrespectful in... More

Went here for the Fertility Festival. It was much smaller than expected. Still it was cool to see. The shrine is only 3 minute walk from the train station.

Go for the comic relief and plan to spend about 5 minutes. I was hoping for some gag souvenirs to take home to friends but this little shrine is unattended and it being right next to an elementary school actually makes it pretty creepy...

It was quiet at the time I visited. I assume it's quiet other than during the festivities in early April. I shall come back to be part of the festival sometime soon....

Having wasted hours in the rain the other day at the big Kanamara, AKA Penis Festival, I can honestly say it was a complete waste of time. Now if you like being around obnoxious non-Japanese being loud and drunk and acting like 7th graders, pushing, shoving, and taking photos of themselves with the large phallic statues, then sure, this is... Visited this shrine for Kanamara Matsuri and was not disappointed! Beautiful shrine, and the precession with the giant penis floats was amazing! Would definately go again. Only in Japan! 😛

The Kanayama-jinja Shrine is small Shinto shrine dedicated to an iron phallus. There is a famous festival held in Kawasaki on the first Sunday of April dedicated to all things phallic but otherwise it is very quiet, almost neglected. The shrine is close to the Kawasaki Daishi station. Once you come out of the station (facing south), cross the main... More
