Hakone area is called a Geo Park designated by the government. Owakudani, for example was formed approximately 3,000 years ago. This area around Mt. Kamiyama erupted subsequently a still volcanic fumes of hydrogen sulfur emitted. Geo Museum is good lesson place to know overview.

Small museum at The Owakudani stop on the Hakone Ropeway. 100 yen and it will explain what you see outside in the sulphur fields in a fun interactive way. Microscope samples, working models, interactive experiments. 20-30 minutes to walk through.

This is a small museum but it gives one a good understanding of the volcanic forces at work in the Hakone area. It is worth a short visit.

Blackened eggs are the thing. Everybody takes a photo in front of the large sculpture in front of the museum/gift shop.
