    Special trip
It took a couple of mountain trains to Gora for me to reach this ropeway. Once on it was terrific. Awesome views of the Sulfur springs below. And if Fuji in the distance. Perhaps it wouldn’t now be built given the ever present risk of one of the fueroles blowing but a thrill nonetheless. Lots of souvenir shops at the other end and a great little cafe for breakfast.

Good experience on a sunny day
The ride up is really pretty, but that’s basically what it is. A ride to the top. Where everyone tries the black eggs. Lots of food and souvenirs to buy. We lucked out and had a clear day so it was a really good experience but I think if it were cloudy I’d pass.

    Mt Fuji and the ropeway
Superb experience, going over the hills and a live volcanic crater with sulphur gas emitting. The ropeway takes you all the way to Ashi lake for a short cruise. We got magnificent views of Mt. Fuji from the ropeway. It was well worth the effort.

The journey matters and it is an awesome one!
The Hakone Ropeway is an experience unto itself. First you take an old school switchback train up the mountain. Then you take a unique cable car up, and finally the ropeway (gondola) where you go over Hakone, Mt. Fuji in the distance and some neat sulphur spots. Finally you take a pirate-style ship over back to the town area. A very cool experience but do note that the cost of this is separate from your JR Rail Pass, but we felt the entire package was totally worth it for the experience. Highly recommend checking it out for the sites and experiences. If you found this helpful, please indicate with thumbs up so I know where to focus my future review efforts!

As expected, superb views of the overall Hakone caldera
Long ropeway transit - excellent views of the geothermal "hell". We got a small view of Mt. Fuji, but on the right day, it would be outstanding. Best way to get over to the Lake from the train stations... Well worth it. I would recommend getting the Hakone Pass as it make it much easier to take the cable car, ropeway, sightseeing tour, etc

    Views From All Stations
We used our pass to take the ropeway up to the Okuwadani station. That was as far was we wanted to go on this trip since we previously visited Lake Ashii. Luckily we had good timing when we arrived so we only had to wait in the queue for about 15 minutes or so. Boarding was quick and efficient. We ended up sharing our gondola with three other people. As we lifted out of the station the ride was quite smooth. The panorama views were excellent on a mostly clear day. However as we got higher, the winds started picking up but the gondola was quite stable as it was supported on parallel cables. the whistling of wind was just a small indicator of what was to come when we got off at the station (got blown around). Sitting on the left side going up gave us an aerial view of all the steam venting going on in Owakudani. When it came time to ride back down our the queue was even shorter and we boarded immediately. At Souza Station we grabbed a snack and drink and enjoyed the views without the wind. It was so much nicer and modern versus the last time years ago.

Stunning Views; but beware of closure due to strong winds
Amazing experience. We were very lucky. Out of the 3 days of our Hakone pass, the ropeway was down for 2.5 days due to strong winds - we managed to catch it at least once during one morning. The views were stunning, especially across Owakudani (volcanic activity) where one could smell the sulfur strongly. We could also see Mt Fuji clearly throughout that morning. We would have just use it everyday if we could (if it was not closed due to strong winds).

Wonderful cable car ride down from Hakone Geonuseum to Owakudani Valley and Lake Ashi. Always a thrillingly precarious but ultimately safe ride.

Okay so Mt Fuji was hiding. Not anyones fault. Train and funicular up from Hakone was horrific, rammed with people literally. Massive queues, herded from station to station, first going down to Lake Ashi and then back up aftewards. Took hours just to get there and back. Awful. Waste of money. Don't bother at all. Nothing much at the Lake to see either. Wasted day trip for us I'm afraid all round.

Well maintained, easy to use. Felt safe. Well signposted. However, can be closed down if the weather is bad.

These were the biggest gondolas we have been in holding up to 18 people. It was a scenic trip that took us up to the active volcano.

The Hakone ropeway is covered by your Hakone FreePass which also includes your train travel from certain local stations, going on the pirate ship cruise and various bus routes. It’s very good value at ¥5000 and essentially covers exactly the same as many much more expensive ‘tours’ that cost 3-4 times that amount. Just buy the pass independently - we bought ours from the dedicated ticket office at Odawara station which covered our onwards travel to Gora, where we then boarded the cable car followed by the ropeway.
There are two sections of the ropeway. At the first stop you can check out the gift shop and buy some black eggs. Essentially just hard boiled eggs where the shell is black but it’s a novelty anyway (¥500 for 4 eggs).
The second section takes you up to the lake, during which you can spot Mount Fuji, where you can have lunch in the restaurant and then go on the pirate boat cruise. You can also see Mount Fuji from the boat. We got off at the second stop and wandered along to the shrine before using our Hakone FreePass to return by bus to Mishima station. From there we used our Japan Rail Pass to get back to our accommodation.
It was an excellent day out. The pass actually lasts for 2 days in case you want to take things more slowly and visit all the museums and exhibitions etc.
