We took the Tozan Railway up the mountain from Hakone to the Open Air Museum. It is not the fastest way to travel, but it is the most charming. It was raining pretty hard, and was overcast and foggy on the day we rode the train, but that did not detract from the lovely views of the mountains. If anything,... More

It's very interesting experience for sure. We only took it once since it is very slow... It goes a zig-zag way climbing up the mountain without turning. It's a unique experience to have.

The train passes in some narrow places where it has to drive backwards in order to make the turn. pretty funny (and very safe).

The train runs from a Hakone Yumoto and goes to Gora where you can join the cable car. The railway has several stations and you hop on and off. The service is quite frequent. We used our Hakone Pass to travel up and down the railway.

This was part of our tour of Hakone and as our guide called the zigzag train climbing up to Hakone village up the mountain by performing switchbacks along the way. The views are quite nice along the forest and it would be an experience for rail enthusiasts. The ride was free thanks to our Hakone freedom pass and it took... More

Very quaint (slow) mode of transportation to get to the Hakone area if you don't have a car or prefer not to take a bus.

First time to ride a switchback train. There were beautiful views of the mountainside and the rickety train had lots of character. Enjoyable.

Great experience! If you are planning to visit The Valley on the top of the mountain where the cable car and rope way takes you, I would recommend to buy a Hakone Pass because it should include all the transportation. We just bought two single return tickets and I think at the end it was more convenient to buy the... More

Great mode of travel for navigating the mountains of Hakone region. It's a bit slow by today's standards of buses but it gets you there in a reasonable amount of time. The switchbacks are cool! When you depart from Hakone-Yumoto, it'll change directions 3 times so by the time you get to the cable cars at the end of the... More

It was convenient to use the Hakone Free Pass to board the train. It can be crowded due to the amount of tourists that visit, but you can still see some great views of Hakone and some flowers along the way. It was also my first time experiencing switchbacks on a train ride, so they were a pleasant surprise.
