The train was comfortable and well heated (in winter). Scenery was beautiful (autumn leaves). It runs on time and was an educational journey for the kids - what is a switchback train and how it works. We found this analogy works for the kids - when we want to walk up a steep gradient, e.g. from first floor to 4th floor of a building, we need to take the steps in a zig-zag manner as it is not possible to build the steps steeply in one direction from the 1st floor to the 4th. Same with the train - unable to build one steep track up the mountain, so it has to be done in a zig-zag manner. Trains, unlike human, cannot "turn" to go up the next track, so it has to "switchback/sides", plus it has to wait for the other train to come down before it can go up the same track. We had a lot of conversations on how this works and the kids had fun staring at the tracks and looking out for the train conductor / driver etc.

It's a very interesting railway to go up to Gora from Hakone Yumato Station at the bottom. What is interesting is the number of switchbacks required to go up where the train will stop at a Switch Station (they'll informed you that this is not a station for people to get on/get off), then the drivers will switch from the front the back. Then the train will go back to where it came from but switches tracks, so it'll be kinda zigzag motion to go up. So the front and back of the train changes a few times. We find this kinda interesting. We came in the morning so there were many people. We took the train again later in the evening and it was less people, and as it gets darker the train light was one creating a whole new ambience for the train. Definitely have to experience it yourself.

Very scenic zigzag (switchback) single track railway leading up the mountain through a narrow gorge.
The Valley is too narrow for curves so the track must zigzag its way up with the driver moving from the front to the back of the train which then becomes the new front. This happens three times in the course of the journey

Caught the Hakone Tozan Railway from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora, stepping off at Chokokunomori to see the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Railway was particularly interesting: Went through 13 tunnels dug some 100 years ago that lined up end to end would be 2 km long; Climbed the steepest incline in Japan (and the 2nd steepest incline in the world); Had to traverse multiple switchbacks. An engineering masterpiece. Easy to connect in Hakone-Yumoto when arriving on the Romance Car from Tokyo (just follow the people, train departs form the same station). Got a friendly welcome from the railway staff in Gora, clearly happy to see travellers back after COVID-19. A great experience

A unique ride on a historic rail line. It seems to serve the locals very well. It was a slow smooth ride with an idyllic view of the mountain scenery, shops and houses so close to the rail line. It was a short steep ride to the stop where we had to disembark in order to catch the cable car. Short but sweet ride.

Fortunately we got to do a lot of this rail trip although buses were needed for a part that was closed. The countryside was beautiful even on a dull day. The old railcar creaked and rattled but was nice and warm on a wintery day.

Thoroughly enjoyed the leisurely ride on an old tram down the mountain. There's one track and we happened to be there during hydrangea season, which lined both sides of the track. It's interesting how they work the switchbacks. The negative is the seats are a little uncomfortable.
