- Tsurupack1,351 contributionsAfter the snowI was looking forward to a stroll through the gardens after it snowed, but unfortunately it was closed, perhaps due to danger. The Richter works I bought for a lot of money took up an entire room, with two or three pieces, large and small. The Modern Time exhibition was okay. The collection was wonderful. I'm glad I was able to return before the admission fee increased significantly.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 February 2024
- EthelEssex, United Kingdom12 contributionsDefinitely worth visiting! The best contemporary art museum we’ve ever been to. Beautifully laid out inside - light and airy - with a lovely nature walk through the woods around it (fairly short (15/30 mins - you can take a shortcut - on very good wooden paths) with art pieces along the way. Inside, we saw works from the great Impressionists and others but we most enjoyed the 2 contemporary exhibitions currently on show. Excellent. Staff v friendly and welcoming. We went in the morning and it was very peaceful and calm. There’s a good gift shop and the cafe sells superb cakes and coffee (nothing savoury). We spent a wonderful 2 hours there. Highly recommended.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 September 2024
- Grace Annette C YNew York City, New York1,001 contributionsOne of the best international art museums in Hakone JapanWe always visited this museum when we stayed in Hakone (every 2-3 years). The museum itself is small and easy to navigate. But the collections are super impressive with lots of masterpieces on rotations from around the world. Truly a gem in the art scene in Hakone, Japan. They also have a cute cafe which serves the best artsy jello dessert, like an impressionist painting (in one of the photos).Visited December 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2024

We took a bus to the museum after the Lalique Museum and arrived in about 15 minutes. The architecture of the museum is also interesting. There were fewer permanent exhibits than I expected, but we were able to take a walk around the museum and enjoy the nature. The restaurants and shops were also nice.

This museum is a little hard to get to but the bus chugs by on a regular schedule. The building itself is a piece of art from the entrance to the interior with interesting angles and lighting. We enjoyed the temporary rotating exhibit and the Japanese artists, as well as the painting by the western masters which included a nice Van Gogh river scene. We had lunch in their cafeteria which was delicious – beef stew and potatoes with a rich gravy, a crisp salad, and bread. They had intriguing choices for desert with some linked to the current exhibits!

I got to the museum from bus stop number 2 using the Hakone Free Pass from Gora.
There are 3 to 4 buses per hour.
I don't visit every time I come to Hakone, but I've been there a few times and it's a lovely museum with something to see.

I didn't expect the POLA Museum to reach the levels of Impressionist collections that I frequently visit, but I did expect that the special exhibitions would be worthwhile. I have to say that I have never seen Bonnard so poorly represented as in the current exhibit of "Interior Visions".
The permanent collection was a better representation of works. Cafe was relaxing as was the outdoor nature walk.
I don't think I would return unless I was assured that the temporary exhibitions were superior to what I viewed.

I visited for the first time to see Monet's Water Lilies.
According to the website, the museum owns about 19 of Monet's works, but this time there were only six on display, including Water Lilies and the Water Lily Lake.
There are not many permanent exhibits, but the special exhibits were also worth seeing.
It was a winter evening, so the outdoor promenade was cold, so I didn't walk there. Next time I'd like to visit when there is plenty of greenery.
There is a cafe and restaurant on site.
I impulsively bought mugs of Monet's Water Lilies and Renoir's Anemones at the museum shop.

This is such a surprising site - a perfectly designed gallery housing huge volumes of world class paintings, hidden away in the woods. Like so many things in japan, this is done to perfection. The gallery may look modern but somehow it houses the exhibitions with class and in a way that really brings them to life. The paintings are plentiful and stunning - with the current exhibition providing a coherent and well thought through time line of how western art was progressing from the 1860s. I'd probably say there are only one or two sites like this within 4000 miles (in all of Asia).
Easily reached too using the bus and so there's really no excuse to miss it

The collection in this museum is mediocre. They have one or more mediocre examples of every major artist. I think the exhibit included 5 Renior's from their collection, three of which proved that even Renior had "bad days". One was fair and one was up to expectations. We normally don't see the Renior's "bad days"- top flight museums, such as the Clark Museum in MA, USA, don't collect mediocre paintings from major artists. The same was true of the other major artists represented in the exhibit. The "up side" was the Western style Japanese art, which we do not normally see. From what I have seen of museums in the Hakone area, they are basically "tourist traps" rather than "first rate museums". I suppose that this museum does its best based on its mediocre collection.

They had a temporary exhibit of Modigliani that was very good. The permanent collection was great. The restaurant was great and not too pricy. All around a good stop.

The building itself is worth a visit. This is not meant to detract from the interesting, worthwhile exposition of modern art.
You can actually walk to it from Gora train station.
